Default 3800+4800 CF: Will it blend?

Some say yes:
TG Daily - ATI Radeon 4850/4870 mix and match with Radeon 3850/3870

Some say no:
http://www.fudzilla.com/index.php?op...8075&Itemid=34

Those articles were actually posted on the same day. I trust TGDaily more of course... but its time to find out. 4850 512mb on route. I will CF it with 1 3850 OCed 256mb and 2x3850s (if I have enough wattage which I doubt!).

Lets see how these puppies perform. I'll be doing the following benchmarks:
Crysis at up to 1680x1050
3DMark 06 standard (I don't want to change the settings )
Maybe Vantage if I am allowed to use it without paying for it

Anyone interested in these results?

Below are my results with P35 crossfire (2x3850s OCed) and P45 (1x4850) so far. Take a look.

I'm interested although im kind of skeptical about whether it will work...get them tests done quick though love to see what it does to crysis...

hell maybe i could get a cheapo 3870 and drop it in crossfire with a 4870 on a p35 and get some bonus fps.

Just an FYI, my P35 was everly affecting my 3850s, so I imagine it will absolutely kill your 4870 alone, let along in CF.

I've been told by the head of the R700 team at ATI that it will not work. Plus, what drivers are you going to use?? The 8.6 WHQL drivers lack proper support for the R770 cards and the R770 Hotfix Beta drivers lack proper support for the RV670 cards.

I'm looking forward to this but I am holding off on my CF tests until the WHQL driver set (8.7?) is released soon. I have had enough BSODs with these Series 5 drivers to last me a lifetime without complicating things with Crossfire.

And here I thought I was going to see Tom Dickson's smug grin while chewing up some video cards.
Interesting findings though - With the performance of the 4850 by itself, it makes one wonder - why bother?

I have my doubts about it working, but its worth a shot. I have nothing to lose but patience. worse case senario I rip out my 3850 and throw it out the window... actually yeah, that aint good. remind me to breath

Its a good question. For the poer sacrifice, will it make much sense? Maybe I can get the performance of a 4870, but for what, twice the watts? Still interesting. Plus.. tri-fire is hawt.

I also heard that some dudes had it working, whether it was a lie or a hack, who knows, it is the internet after all.

I hope it works, I have 3 3870s and it would be great to use one or 2 with a 48xx.

Damn a nice way to upgarde if you can still use the old card and an excellent way to get a CrossFire on a budget if I buy a 3870 later sounds very interesting . Going to pick up my 4850 right now damn excited as it's going to be a BIG upgrade for me. Can anyone shine light on the Drivers I will need some are saying they just installed card, uninstalled 8.6 and then reinstalled with new card onboard and everything went well, while others are saying you need "hotfix" and that has lead them down a path of misery and BSOD.....I'm confused.
