Default My VisionTek HD 4850 CrossFire results!

The Blah Blah.

Here's something to tide you over while SKY prepares his own 4850 review with them there shiny new parts.

It was a minor mission getting this stuff set up. Purolator decided it'd be awesome if they didn't leave me my package, so I had to wait until 7 to drive to their depot to pick up my box myself.

Then, I spent many restless hours working on the system. I have 1/2" OD barbs on my radiator, so it took me forever to get the 3/8" ID tubing on there. Even now I didn't get it all the way, so I'm worried it'll leak eventually. PC Ice started foaming like crazy. Anyhow, took me about 12 hours including the time I sat there watching it bleed (couldn't leave it alone, I have cats who want to eat the foam coming out of my res).

That doesn't include the 6 or so hours I spent earlier repartitioning and backing up my system drive to install Vista x64 and reinstall XP MCE 2005.

So, with that done, I popped the CPU up to 3.6 GHz at 1.45V, RAM to 1081 MHz 5-5-5-14. Borrowed Vantage from a buddy. Left the 4850s at stock. And, without further ado, here are the results...

The Results

Intel Core 2 E6600 @ 3.6 GHz (450.5 FSB x 8)
DFI LanParty LT X38-T2R
2GB Ballistix DDR2 @ 1081 MHz (5-5-5-14 2T, 5:6 ratio)
2x VisionTek HD 4850 in CrossFireX

3DMark Vantage, Performance 1280x1024

11121 Points
Well, looks like those hotfix drivers really did work. Preview results showed a few hundred less than what I got, and those were done with enthusiast-end Core 2 Quads.

Half Life 2: Lost Coast, Max Settings 1920x1200 (6xAA, 16xAF)

127.65 fps
Well, this is weird to say the least. Seems like CF isn't working at all here, but I should check that with a GPU graph. According to this post, a single 8800GT destroyed my result.

Sit tight, more results to come as I install software.

nice, according to benchmarks i saw a second 4850 will literally double fps, when it works anyways. What i REALLY want to know though, is how 3 or 4 of them will perform. If it scales just as well with even more cards that would be amazing. Cant seem to find any benchmarks of tri/quad crossfire though :(

I haven't decided on whether or not I will try trifire yet. I'm going to wait for the 3850 1GB and 3870 GDDR5 reviews, and I'll watch the price war wage for a few weeks before I finally decide to get another 4850.

Your 3DMark Vantage score is quite low man.

I scored just under 15000 points in Performance mode.

Both my cards are OCed to 700 core and 2000 memory.

I'm running them on an Asus P5Q-E with a Q9450 CPU at 3.4GHz and 4GB of OCZ DDR2-1066 Reaper HPC RAM.

With a single card, my score was around 7700.

So yes, a second card offers basically double the performance. This is a VAST improvement over the terrible 30% increase when using dual 3870 cards.

I was using the Hotfix drivers.

His Vantage score is low due to his CPU, NOT his GPUs.

Can't say. Mobo is dead ATM. Bought a LT X48-T2R (same as the LT X38-T2R, just higher binned), which I'm waiting for. Once that comes back, I'll run some more benchmarks.

So are you saying that one card of your 4870 card is as good as his 4850 Crossfire?

Well I ran it at 1920 x 1200 6 x AA 16 x AF and all settings maxed. My system is in the sig. Oh I am running 8.6 Hotfix drivers. So I guess yes if his cards are working in Crossfire.

Oh and running stock clocks. Fan adjusted to 30% from 25%.
