Default GTX 980 vs GTX 1060

Helping put together a system for a friend and have the choice of a EVGA GTX 980 Classified and Gigabyte GTX 1060 Extreme. Opinions on which to go with? Will be mainly Gaming at 1080 with possible upgrade to 1440.

I own an MSI 980 Gaming 4G and an EVGA 1060 SC 6GB. I would get the 1060 6GB. More vram, less power and better architecture. Other than that they perform about the same. FWIW they are used with 1440P displays.

That covers a lot of ground ^. At 1440 the GTX980 looks a little better but it depends on what games that he'd be playing.

I really don't like the 192bit trend in general.

Using HWBench as a comparison here:

GeForce GTX 1060 vs GeForce GTX 980

We can see that the performance is within a few percentage of each other. The difference is primarily architecture, vram and power consumption as Coach has mentioned.

They are basically equal performance wise. Slight edge to the 1060 6GB in DX12.

Decided to go with the 1060. May as well go with the newer product.

I will prefer the new card every time. Since i watched so many reviews there is no doubt. This card is going to be better and better than gtx 980 because of driver updates. 980 will be forgotten very soon:( Same thing with my gtx 780. So 1060 is the choice.
