Default Issues with R9 290 in crossfire on a P67 mobo

Is anyone here running this configuration successfully?

I get higher scores in crossfire vs single gpu on 3d mark and any benchmark program, but if I try them in games (BF4, Planetary Annihilation, Skyrim) I get no increase over single GPU and possibly even a decrease. If I look at the usage, I can see the usage goes from 0 to 100% alternating on the cards and makes this see-saw pattern that it does not do on artificial benchmarks.

I'm running them in pci-e 2.0 x8/x8mode , latest BIOS, 14.2 drivers, but I'm wondering if something is preventing them from working fully. The 2.0 x8/x8 shouldn't be a limitation on bandwidth because it would also affect the benchmarks so something else must be going on.

Is there a way to make sure that ULPS is disabled permanently? (I did the registry change but I don't know if it 'sticks').

Is there any other settings/functionality like ULPS that could affect crossfire in games?

Thanks for any suggestions.

It definetely should run fine in x8/x8. I will let someone more familiar with crossfire walk you through any required settings to get it running properly. Sounds like a settings issue.

Make sure you have this checked off, just in case (Ignore that it says AMD FirePro, it was a quick Google search for the image, for you it should be under Performance aspect):

Also, try out the 14.3 Beta Catalyst drivers too.

I hope this is helpful.. But i'm not sure if you are looking for max fps increase.. If so and you are not seeing it, make sure VSYNC is disabled in your games.

Arinoth: Yeah that checkbox is there.

Also I've tried with VSync on and Off. Neither really stops the 0% to 100% to 0% issue.

Hmm, I'm trying to think of something else you can try, I'm limited in what I can recommend due to internal methods that I can't share.

I will try to disable ULPS another way. I don't like Trixx but I hear the beta version of Afterburner has it so I will try with that. Maybe the way I disable in registry vs how Afterburner does it is different. It really sounds like ULPS the more I think about it.
