My System Specs

Default Need some advice on GPU's

Hey Guys,

I was looking to purchase 2 x R9 290's after christmas to upgrade my 7950's and had planned to put them under water but with the price hike I am looking at other options. I have 3 x QNIX 27inch 2560 x 1440 monitors but I will only be gaming on the center one and do not plan on doing eyefinity or surround. Whatever cards I get will be water cooled but I need something ASAP as one of my 7950's is gone right now getting RMA'ed (Second time in 6 months) and the other is artifacting and needs to be sent away soon. Haven't had much luck with XFX this gen. Right now I am thinking of going with 2 x 780's or 1 x 780 ti but keep moving between them and haven't been able to pull the trigger. I will also be overclocking as much as I can.

Any opinions or if anyone has gone either way and has some advice would be great!

I would stick with AMD personally 2560x1440 a 7970-280x-290-290x single card can drive that granted not like 2 7950s can.

I went from a 670 (with the balls overclocked off it) to dual 780's for my 2560x1440.. Granted that I don't play many AAA titles these days but my rig barely stretches it's legs most of the time.

I would go single 780ti.. or dual 770's atm. Yes it's still more expensive than a 290x BUT it's faster and you can find them and at (or near) their MSRP, which you can't with AMD at the moment.
I wouldn't go 780 because the performance to price gap is just that little too much at the moment. 780ti should near match dual 770's without the SLI stuff but it's a significant investment.
If you don't have a custom loop, the DCII is stellar on thermals and acoustics (even if you do have one it's a top notch card but blocks may well be harder to find to fit)

Door number 3 is to live with the (replaced) 7950's and then look at the new nvidia chips (which the right people for me are excited about) in ~4 - 6 months.

Are the xfire 7950 not fast enough for you?

It's not that the dual 7950's aren't doing it for me, its that I am having a hell of a time RMA'ing them. I just got my 7950's back in late November and I had to send one I got back away right away because it was DOA from XFX in the states. I am expecting that one back any time but now the one I have left that I also had replaced at the end of Nov is artifacting when I stress it with anything. I have had these cards for 2 years and have had 3 replacements with each card already. I haven't even overclocked! I know its just bad luck as I have had XFX products in the past and they have been great but I am getting tired of this so I want an upgrade.

Well thanks for the suggestions, I went to Memory Express to get two 780's and they happened to have an open box 290 in stock for 5% off. I picked that up and ordered another from ncix (who knows when it will ship but now that I have one card it doesn't matter much)

congrats on the card how hot you find it runs?

I feel for you having to RMA I've done it before and its a pain going without for approx 2 weeks normally. XFX from my knowledge has a pretty good RMA service though and I never had issues with any of my 7950's (had 5 in total ).

Already registered it, still has the full 3 years through ASUS.

I set it to cap at 85 degrees, so the fan hits around 55% and can get quite loud if I have my comp up on my desk with the side off. I don't notice it as much when the side panel is on and its under my desk and I usually use a headset so the noise doesn't really bother me.
