do you guys think it's a good deal to start mining?
290 = approx 800kh/s
280x = approx 700kh/s

You can find easilly a 280x for 100$ less so I think the 280x is a better buy.

I have been mining LTC and I gotta say, at the current difficulty I am not sure I would invest in hardware to start mining. IMO I would like to see the price of LTC double.... keep it fun :)

The issue with buying hardware now is that you have to run under the assumption that you'll make more than your hardware price + what you could've made buying the coin straight up. With the looming threat of ASIC Scrypt miners, (I can't imagine all 3 of the efforts are scams ) I'd argue the best thing to do is put the big hardware price in a savings account and wait to see what happens to the market when the Scrypt miners come. (If you're betting on a price hike, then make the "savings" be a bunch of cryptos.)

Since I don't have any AMD cards, I actually am hoping for ASIC to crash LTC and BTC, and I'll get a couple Haswell-E rigs to have fun with whatever CPU only coin rises up in their wake ...and if there's no good coin I'll point everything at BOINC/F@H again.

I have, made a world of difference too ... went from 560kH/s up to 740kH/s! My clocks had to go up slightly (up to 1080 from 1050), and I'm running 1.093V so my power went up slightly, but it's more than compensated for with the increased hash rate.

I thought for a while I just had a dud of a card, since all the Gigabyte windforce 3 cards I saw were easily topping 700, so I'm very happy that it solved my problem.

Didn't have any effect on my XFX, but I was already pulling down 700 kH/s.
