You actually have to wonder? Current day 7870/GTX650Ti Boost will surpass the performance of the next gen consoles, so it stands to reason the future mid-level cards will also surpass by a decent margin.

Linux users are rejoicing. I know I wasn't looking forward to buying windows 8 just for a new version of direct x.

Mantle brings steam OS closer to being a reality. Currently only one of my steam games is non direct X, but I hope that changes very soon.

Well since Mantle is just an API that works together with DirectX it'll be good on either NVIDIA or AMD, of course it'll be better on AMD if the developers decided to program with Mantle as well. This is actually interesting since now there's a reason to buy a hexa-core AMD CPU, if what they say is true then game can finally take a better advantage of multi-core technology.

I guess we'll just have to see the benchmarks of BF4 Before and After Mantle update.

It's reliant on GCN.. which is only HD 7xxx series and the up-coming R9's.
It's also not JUST an API, so no, it won't work on "anything".

That said, there isn't much to stop Nvidia creating a mantle compatible API that would make benefit of some of the optimizations GCN will have via mantle just leveraged through Cuda.

This is true, though they would sill have the added hurtle of getting that to work efficiently with the consoles that are all AMD.

"This is where Mantle gets factored into the equation; not as a direct replacement for DirectX or OpenGL but rather as a complementary force. It’s an API that focuses on “bare metal”, low level programming with a thin, lightweight driver that effectively manages resource distribution, grants additional control over the graphics memory interface and optimizes those aforementioned draw-calls. Think of Mantle like a low level strafing run that targets key components rather than high level carpet bombing that may or may not achieve a given objective."

While yes it relies on GCN is that going to stop developers from developing it? Not really.
