Default How to install a 7900GTX heatsink on a 6800GT

Well I'm sure most people don't care about this, but I'm building a pretty silent system as an HTPC and I wanted to get rid of the hair dryer cooler on the 6800GT, so I grabbed a spare 7900GTX heatsink. I'll update with pics and whatnot. Just letting you all know it's coming ;)

is this for silence, performance, or expediency? Wouldn't there be many aftermarket coolers that would do the job much better and quieter than the stock 7900GTX HSF? Nevertheless, it's always interesting to see what mod you come up with!:p

pictures still coming for this, but I gotta say it's not very silent. For whatever reason, the automatic fan control no longer works, even though on the 6800GT I believe there was fan control, and I've got the pins plugged into their corresponding connectors.... Oh well. I have yet to get some temps for the card as the system is at my parents' place. It's going to be a media center for them, so I"ll get this up as soon as I can.

I would have opted to go with an aftermarket cooler.

The Zalman FATAL1TY FC-ZV9 from what I have read is a very good VGA cooler.

NCIX wants around $57.00

I definately disagree about using an aftermarket cooler instead of the 7900GTX cooler. Those things are beasts.

Actually in this case I disagree with your statement.

"One of Zalman's features for this cooler is that it is lighter than many of its competition, and its true, the FC-ZV9 felt slightly lighter than the stock cooler that came with the BFG 7800GT OC"

That is a 7800GT cooler is isn't near as good as the 7900GTX cooler. The 7900GTX is almost if not more than twice the size as the 7800gt cooler.

The 7900GTX is in my opinion the best videocard cooler there is.

Now that's plain exageration :)

I think the goal of this mod is to use an heatsink he had laying around instead of purchasing one.

If it's twice as big as the 7800GT cooler than would it not weight more?
IMHO after market coolers are the way to go for a couple of reason.
1. They tend to be made of copper therefore being more efficient at cooling the GPU than the stock aluminum cooler.
2. The after market coolers have a bigger fan and tend to be not as loud as the stock cooler.
