Unhappy Loud HD5770 - Solution?

Hi guys,

I know that my video card is old, but it's loud and driving me crazy!
The stock HSF has in the past month become louder and has this distinctive mechanical noise that's become louder with it.
I have dusted it good with the air compressor and reapplied the thermal paste - no improvement (tops off around 84C in World of Warcraft)
I then found a video on youtube saying that the HSFs ATI used back in 2008 (Delta) could be made quiet again by peeling back the sticker behind it, and putting some drops of grease/oil into it. I used a drop of automotive brake lubricant. This made it even louder!

I then removed the fan and used some twist ties to mount a Noctua NF-F12 case fan, but my temperatures then went above 100C in World of Warcraft.

(This IS a Noctua. I just dyed it black)

So... as a poor man who is looking to extend the life of his old card while not going crazy from the noise (That noise, that noise, that noise, that noise, that noise, that noise....!) what would you recommend?

Thanks for your time!

Find a dead one and rob the fan / heatsink from it.

I can't tell from that picture.. is the heatsink still on it or do you just have the fan blowing on the board / chip??

I’m not sure if this post will go through.
My posts seem to be “delayed for moderation” half the time.
But here we go, again:

That looks really cool! (no pun intended hohoho)
How quiet have you found it under a full load?

You’re right, it could have been a better picture D:
The heatsink is still mounted to the card. I just removed the factory fan and shroud.
The NF-F12 fan is plugged into the mobo and is running at full throttle.
I mounted the fan on an angle like that, so that it would blow air through the fins of the stock heatsink, and out the back of the case.
I have since put back on the loud, factory HSF and shroud.

It's quieter than the 60mm or so blower fan that comes on the stock heatsink of my card. And I have it running max speed all the time, that card is making Litecoins.

And until you have 5 posts, any posts you make with links in them go into moderation. We catch most spammers that way.

My guess is you "modified setup" wouldn't have enough volume of air through the fins. It would be blowing lots of air around, but its not all forced through the fins like on the original. I would say you have 3 options:

A) find a cheap non-working 5770 and rip the fan setup off it.
B) buy an after market cooler
C) just get a new graphics card...you can get some pretty good deals on used cards here if you keep an eye on the buy/sell/trade section.

If you are content with the cards performance, then the aftermarket cooler would be your cheapest option...if you find it somewhat lacking or can spare the bit of extra cash you may be able to get a few bucks for the 5770 and upgrade. Your call.

If you are a gamer I vote get/save for a newer card, unless you really don't need more power than a 5770

I sold my 6950 2GB for like $150 each last fall/winter

The 6950's go for about $130 these days... definitely affordable, and great performance, too boot!
