Default $200 GPU Recommendation. NVIDIA GTX 660 vs ATI 7850

Hey guys, is it better to get a NVIDIA GTX 660 or ATI 7850? Playing mainly SC2, but I'll be running Folding@Home as well, which ATI is very good with right now. I'm gonna play at 1080P. It'll be combined with my rig in sig.

Looking at the AnandTech comparison charts, they both seem to be fairly even, so it doesn't seem like I can go wrong with either.

AnandTech | Bench - GPU13

660 just smashes the 7850 in SC2.
The 460 is still more than capable. I'm curious what 700 series cards are coming this month.

Wait for 760, should be a free upgrade to a 660ti.. or 750 should be a 660 at 650 price.

From my personal research I did earlier this year for my home machine (not in My System Specs) I ended up going with ASUS's GTX 660 DC II, the non-OC version. The reasons for my pick were three-fold: Acoustic/Performance/Dollar. This card had the best acoustics (at the time) for the price and performance. Although I am very happy with it, I would still recommend to you, to do your homework and actually see which brand has a better CS2 performance, even though GTX 660 is a better overall performer compared to an HD7850.

Folding@Home stats for this card, well for base line you can check-out my FAH stats: EmptyMellon - User Summary - EXTREME Overclocking Folding @ Home Stats. All the GTX660 keeps getting is project 8054 lately, which produces 3,874 points/WU, which is about 19K PPD. My card is not OC'ed. The additional points come from my CPU which is an AMD Phenom II 1090T @ 3.2GHz (stock).

Hope this helps.

When is that being released?

Odd, I'm getting about 40-45K PPD from each of my GTX 660's. Not sure which work units I'm getting though. I have client-type=beta enabled though.

Anyways, yeah, the GTX660 is a fine card. I also have ASUS's DCII version (the OC version though) and even in SLI I can't hear 'em. And they're pegged at 100% all the time. I'm either folding on them or playing BF3.

Recommend the GTX660 over the 7850. I wouldn't bother waiting for the new series at all. I can't see Nvidia using the 660Ti core for the 660. Plus, it might be months before something is released.

My guess the 760 will be a riced up 670 with uber high mem. Which will be one insane bang for your buck card. REALLY hoping AMDs rumored 8 series is true as they are getting the ass handed to them right now. No idea one when either is landing. :(

Personally unless it was a 'known' fact...I would never wait more than 4 weeks for any GPU release. Tech is moving so fast...there will always be something better 'just around the corner'. Get a 660 now and enjoy.

For both mine and geokilla's benefit, which of the OC'ed GTX660 version do you have: GTX660-DC2T-2GD5 or GTX660-DC2O-2GD5? Since 20K-30K PPD is quite the difference. Or is it really the type of WUs?

I have the GTX660-DC2O-2GD5. Both of them are currently working on WU 8900 and getting 46037 and 42815.

There doesn't seem to be a difference between the two except for clock speeds, meaning one is binned higher than the other?
