My System Specs

Default My GPU fan stopped working

Well this is a sad day for me... my fan on the GPU is busted. Let me clarify... my Sapphire Radeon HD 6950 was working perfectly 4 days ago, the day after that however it didn't. The GPU temperature was rising over 100 Celsius so I looked at Catalyst Control Center, it says the fan is working fine (at 36% speed) however when I opened my case... the fan isn't spinning. So I stopped the PC, took the card out, verify is the fan cable is seated properly, it is. So I dusted it out with compressed air and some pincers (there's dust between the fan and the heatsink)

Sadly no use, I've contacted Sapphire, they said to RMA it (I bought it in June 2011). So I've contact DirectCanada (where I bought it) and they said the product is not warrantied.. yet it says on Sapphire's site that it is (2 years) but as usual there's this nice little fine print at the bottom of the warranty saying this: Warranty may vary from Country/Region and the customer must verify directly with the Sapphire Authorised Dealer/Reseller from where the product was purchased..

Thinking that it would be 2 years since I mean... USA is probably 2 years right? Nooooope, in Canada it's 1 year that's it that's all. The country that's glued next to the USA doesn't get the same 2 years.

So now, Sapphire will accept the RMA if I pay between 25-45$ for the shipping, which isn't bad, but they said it'll take 2-3 months before getting a new one.... Which is ridiculous. I understand it's Hong Kong but come on they don't have an office in USA or something?

Well now that I got that out of my system, I guess the question is this: Should I send it to RMA or should I get a new one?

You could always buy a 2nd one and RMA that one and xfire it when you get it back from RMA :)

I definitely wouldn't just trash it.

The question is: what can you get for $25-40? I would pay the postage for the rma, and buy a cheap card in the mean time, or use an old card and suffer.
The other option is to buy a new card 7950 and when you get the rma back, sell it.
Or, buy another 6950 and then cross fire when you get this one back.

Well I do have a 6770 laying around somewhere lol... just can't do much game development now :P That I realize I can't buy a 7000 series (well the 79XX anyway) because my MOBO uses PCI-E 2.1... not 3.0 so then if I want to take full advantage of the 7000 series I would need to switch CPU and MOBO... good god lol.

Pci 3.0 is absolutely no reason not to change. Get a new card then sell the 6950 when it comes back from rma. You can get $140 for it.

Good idea but I think I should see some performance charts compare PCI-E 2.0 speed to a PCI-E 3.0 speed first. You know a place where I can find one?

I am running 7950 on my Gigabyte X58 mobo, PCIE 2. I am happy with it. 60 FPS for Crysis 3, on a 60 Hz monitor. I do not know the average FPS. since I did not look for it.

doesn't exist as current cards don't even saturate 2.0

PCI Express 3.0 would carry a bit rate of 8 gigatransfers per second (GT/s), and that it would be backward compatible with existing PCIe implementations.

PCIe 2.0 standard doubles the transfer rate compared with PCIe 1.0 to 5 GT/s and the per-lane throughput rises from 250 MB/s to 500 MB/s.

you would be locked 5 G/T's pcie2 on MB if update then you get the 8 G/T's

From the OP I gather the card is till functional? Only the fan has stopped working, right? Why don't you just get some 80mm or 92mm fans and cable tie them to the heatsink? You'll need to be careful with how much the card dips due to the extra weight though.
