7970 or Xfire 7870 ?

im thinking of selling my 5970 with EK WB and buying either a 1x 7970 for my i5 or 2x 7870 in xfire

which is best ?

Since you have a 23'' monitor I'm assuming it is 1080P. A 7970 might be overkill. I'd look at getting a single card first. Maybe a 7950 or 660Ti even. Then when you need more juice you can add a second. I wouldn't go straight to dual cards. I've always felt let down by SLI/Xfire. There's usually driver issues for new games and its useless if you play any games that don't support dual cards.

7950 is a beast for the price BUT nvidia tend to do better at the lower (1080) resolutions than ati.. also faster to market with sli profiles etc.

1 card is plenty unless your going 3d or 120hz etc.., 660ti 670 7870 7950 pick one and be happy.

I dont get it since when a card is overkill for fps ? And yeah 23" i have a tri-fire setup atm and going to 1 7970 would be overkill ?

Since probably a generation or two ago??? Single mid level cards will push 1080p at 60fps no problem on most games. No point in going over that for single monitor setups.... You start moving into single 27"+ monitors or multi-monitor setups you buy the biggest cards you can afford to drive them.

Just get a single 7970 and be happy, should keep you going for a while.

That's what i was asking 1x 7970 or 2x 7870

So i guess i'll get the 7970 :)

As a general rule of thumb, go with the best single gpu solution possible. Throwing multiple cards together can often lead to issues that you don't want to deal with.
