Default Gigabyte HD 7970 Super Overclock Review Comment Thread

The Gigabyte HD 7970 Super Overclock will likely prompt heated debates, not for performance but rather due to the heatsink Gigabyte is using. In the place of their well known coolers, a new WindForce -dubbed the "5X"- has been designed and it uses five tiny, rather loud fans to pull air through a triple slot fin array. Innovative? Insane? We'll let you be the judge.

Gigabyte SOC cards are never stable and they alaways lower the frequences after...I hope this one will be good...

Can you explain that? I've had nothing but good long term results with SOC cards in my rigs.

Dat OC is insane but its not really appealing... i mean it looks kinda meh, and its not like asus or msi where with their super high end (matrix and lightning) they look as good as the perform and a lot more silently as well so not for me.... side note GREAT review as always sky

Oh my.... 40/60mm fans scare me... I've worked with enough 1U servers to know this can only lead to headaches!!

I would love to own this card... I love it when companies try something new and this card looks different from any I have ever seen before. The OC on it was extremely impressive as well, great work SKY as always my favourite review of the bunch. It is sad that it is so loud however I pretty much always play with a headset on so I would never hear it. If only I had the cash. Also a bunch of reviews I've read haven't been able to push the card up that high... Did you just get a good one?

I was pretty obsessive about this one. Typically, I put between 2-3 hours into overclocking a card. This time it was more like 6-8 hours. If you look at the third page in the OC Guru II (below), that's where all the fun happens:

Basically, in order to get the best clock speeds, it seems you have to tweak nearly every setting there; sometimes lowering frequencies while raising others. It is a real balancing act.

Other than that, I am quite sure I got one of those "golden" samples that come along every now and then. It just needs a LOT of massaging and hours of tweaking to get past the 1200MHz mark.

Well i had a GTX 560 ti SOC that was not stable,in crysis, artifacts, 1GHZ was too much, and i know a mate who tried a GTX 570 SOC and same, in crysis only, artifacts,it's the problem of crysis^^

PS; after this, the new GTX 560 ti SOC of gigabyte was 950 mhz only..

So,i hope that they will test enought this card^^
