Something was wrong if that system was bottlenecking a 8800GT... I used to run an old C2D @3.2 and i went to aan i7 950 and my FPs went up 3 frames moving my GTX275 from the c2d to the 1366 socket i7 system. OP, if your cpu is overclocked to at least 3 GHz you should be ok, 4GB of RAM is enough.

something wasn't right with your system.

e6600 was a 65nm processor vs the E8400 which was a 45nm processor that alone made a huge difference.

and that was a 3.2ghz e6600 vs a 4.2ghz e8400

Please stop derailing this thread, sorry OP, again I stand by my word that it should do OK with the CPU overclocked.

He may do "OK" but he'd do better just buying a GTX280

This thread isn't being derailed yet, the conversation is concise as far as I can see.

So long as it is kept Civil.

**EDIT** - To add my thoughts on this, I would honestly upgrade your platform as a whole. There are a lot of people who have upgraded to the newest but the platform is old enough that the difference is negligable.
Sure you could Overclock the CPU, but your board is old, the caps on it have had a few years degrading, how long will the OC last, and how high can you get it stable.
