Default AGP card?

Trying to help a friend who has an older system; but he finds it ok for web use.

System has an ASUS P4P800 mboard (socket 478/Prescott) with 4 GB & Win 7, 32 bit. The current video card (ATI 9600 AIW) - AGP bus - produces a pixellation effect (like that used to mask facial features). The fan on the board is running, case temps are ok, etc.

Guess the card has given up. A new card doesn't have to have the latest & greatest - given it has to be AGP - but decent resolution/color bit depth is desired. The flat panel is an HP with 1600x1200 native resolution.

Any ideas of what might be out there? Are AGP cards still produced or will it be a where-ever I can find one?

Thanks for any insights.

What's he doing with it? Is he gaming? Or just watching movies and surfing the web?

There's only 3 cards listed on NCIX, one of them being a Geforce 6200LE. None of the listed cards will be suitable for gaming purposes (besides flash based games, etc.) but should be more than sufficient for browsing internet/watching 1080P movies.

A hd 4670 was about as good as it got on AGP, though I am not sure if you can still find them. Then it would 4650.

New HD4670's are over $100 + shipping. Get on Ebay, look for a HD3650, they can be had for ~$50 shipped used. Too bad you didn't post this a week ago, I just sold 2 AGP cards (HD3650 and 7300GT). I have a 6200 AGP card I'd ship to Ontario for $25 total if you're interested.

I'd just talk to some of the computer repair places in your area they might have something cheap or free for you.

I still have 2 9600XT 256MB cards kicking around somewhere.

you can also have a look at the PCI versions of the recent cards, like the GT430 and the GT520, or Radeon HD 5450

Thanks for the assistance

Default Thanks

Appreciate the offer fourthman; however, found a used card locally, from a computer store's recycling bin, & the system is running.
