Default MSI HD 7970 Lightning 3GB Review Comment Thread

The HD 7970 may not be too high on enthusiasts' radars these days but MSI is hoping the newest member of their Lightning series will stand out from all of the other cards on the market. It may have a steep price of $600 but its features are unique and the clock speeds are high so this may be worth the premium over NVIDIA's GTX 680.

Well I was rooting for this card to beat the 680, but it just keeps up when overclocked.

Good review, though the 680 still beats it and is cheaper too.

Yes. It's a nice card but there is no excuse for single link connectors on a card at this level or price, let alone the dearth of necessary adapters. However so long as bragging rights matter more than $$$ in the wallet companies will continue to do this, and it's only going to (already is) get worse.

If this card had been released two years from now, I think the whole Single Link debate would have been moot.

But as it stands, many of us are using high quality IPS, PVA, etc 2440 or 2560 displays that were released well before the DP-equipped LED + TN bullshit from the last two years. And if you're charging me $600 (or more) for a GPU, you better make damn sure that you include every adapter known to man...

Luckily, the vast majority of people won't need Dual Link connectors since their resolution is 1920 x 1200 or less.

I was pretty disappointed when I got my 680 to see molex to 6 pin power adapters and nothing else... It seems the majority of companies are no longer giving you goodies with the top end cards :( espeically MSI.

The best part about the low temperatures is that they go hand in hand with near silent acoustics.
How did you experience the noise in comparison to the Gigabyte HD7970?
Would you say the Gigabyte version was noticeably less noisy?
About the same?

I'm asking because the graphs indicate that there is a difference, but your article is kinda vague on just how silent you experienced it in comparison to the most quiet(?) HD7970 yet.

When you get down into the lower decibel readings, they honestly all sound the same.
