HD 6850 = 9.25" long ... OP said he had an issue with this length (although I assume usable).
GTX 550 Ti = 8.8" long

GTX 460/560 1GB = 9.37" long... longer than the 6850.

I think 1) people need to read the post better... 2) the OP needs to actually measure ACCURATELY the longest card his case can fit because he estimated 7.5", which is much less than ANY of these cards.

Zotac's GTX 550 Ti AMP! Edition is about 7" long.
Would this be enough for gaming at 1360x768?

Yes, you can even game at 1080p with that card in some games. My clan mate uses it for sc2.

I'm more of a fan for Nvidia rather than ati.

if youre budget is $245 .. you can consider the Evga GTX 560 1gb GDDR5 from CanadaComputer's.
It's $199, however it has MIR of $30 . XD

you need to accurately measure the space you have. What case is it?

Galaxy MDT GTX 560 is only 8.07" long, and NCIX has it for $169.99 right now:

Galaxy Mdt GeForce GTX 560 830MHZ 1280MB 4GHZ DDR5 3x DVI-D 1XDVI-I 1x Mini-HDMI PCI-E Video Card - Galaxy Technology - 56NGH6DH4TTX

In my experience this card stayed fairly quiet even with a heavy OC. Supports 4 displays as a nice bonus too.

Oh thanks for the heads up, was looking for a NVIDIA 4-display capable card for a friend in this kind of budget, seems to be a good find!
