Default HD 7970 Price Cuts? Donít Count on it.

When the GTX 680 was released last week at $499, many thought that AMD would trim a few bucks off of the HD 7970. Cuts to its $549 price tag havenít happened and if what we hear is true; donít expect any movement on that frontÖ.at least not yet.

NCIX online stock count totally lied to me. I bought a 680 about an hour after they came out and it said they have 8 in stock... Today I got an email saying "we have some galaxy 680s" coming in soon, if you want, we can send you those since we are out of stock on the MSI 680s..... Ummm wtf? D:

Seriously though, how did ATI suddenly get a huge swell of stock like that!?

I have my theories but let's just say that it looked suspiciously well planned.

That was my first though too... if so, that was some sick marketing/planning :) But if I remember correctly, there have been top end cards before that sell for more than the competing cards just based on not enough stock of the other card.

They played the game, and are hoping that people will spend their money on a card thats more expensive and performs 14% less than what is currently offered.

People have spoken with their wallets though, 680's keep getting sold out across the board.

Supply and demand unfortunately. In order to control inventory and backorder lists, price hikes are inevitable.

This doesnt really suprise me, but strategically going forward i think its a mistake.
AMD right now has an opportunity to capitalize on nVidia's stock issues just as they did with early addopters of this generation.
By keeping the price high, they are giving consumers an option to wait, rather then drop the price modestly, and give more incentive to consumers to purchase.
They opted for higher margin, and i think this is going to come back and bite them in the ass.
