The 6970 was the top card of that generation of single GPU cards., so it's replacement in the market tier (performance aside) is actually the 7970.

6970 - 7970
6950 - 7950
6870 - 7870
6850 - 7850
6770 - 7770
6750 - 7750

So what you're getting at the same marketing level (value/mainstream/enthusiast) is more performance, lower power consumption, lower heat production but at a higher cost.

The days of ATI producing first line products at reasonable prices disappeared after the 4000 series -

I disagree with you NyteOwl. AMD went with how ATI number their cards. The HD 6950 more less equaled the HD 5850. The 6970 is more less equaled to the 7870. I know it is confusing. AMD just likes to screw with our heads and want so make it out that how great the new 7800 series was to the 6800 series. when really it is all just marketing gimmick of numbering their cards!!!
