Check out these benchmarks:
AnandTech - Bench - GPU12

Despite the oc potential for both cards, just by looking at (38.8-32.1)/(price difference), is it worth the extra $$?

Hope this help

To be honest, the new 28nm chips run so cool anyways that cooling isn't as much of a concern as it used to be. My 7950 easily runs 20C cooler than my 5830 at full loads.

I think the HD 7870 would be a worthy upgrade to my HD 5850. Looks like I would get between 40%-50% increase. So that alone make's it worth while to upgrade. Plus Tessellation is better with the HD 7870 as well. I am glad that I skipped the 6000 series cards and waited for the 7000 series cards. I wish Nvidia would release their line up sooner rather then later. Give some compition and maybe a bit of a price relief. Anyone know when Nvidia's comparable Kepler card to the 7870 is going to be released? I used AnandTech comparison bench marks. And I can only guess that when the driver mature. We will see even better performance!!!

If the 7870 is anything like the 5870, it will be a solid contender for 2-3 years.
