My System Specs

Default HD7970, overclocking past 1125MHz

The limit in Overdrive is 1125MHz. Limit in MSI Afterburner beta 12 is 1125MHz. TriXX won't overclock a single MHz since it gives me a ULPS error (even though the disable ULPS is checked).

Anyone know of a way to pass this limit?

msiafterburner.exe /xcl
That'll lift the CCC limits.

Application won't even launch if I add that.

Odd, works fine for me and that's how I OC my 7970.
Other option is to enable Unofficial Overclocking in the cfg file, but I believe that may not work with the latest AMD drivers as they've removed some .dll that allowed this 'backdoor'.

When I enable the unofficial overclocking in Afterburner, it removes all clock control.

Does CCC not test overclocks anymore? When I had my 4870 there was a feature that would automatically OC your card and test it's stability for you. I haven't OC'd my video card in years is there anything I should know or use to test?

The main thing to know is that you'll get little benefit out of it. So if you do it for fun, go for it. If you expect performance increase, dream on.

I was thinking that it would be fun to increase the FPS on my 7950 a bit to help with folding and gaming. From what I read in reviews it seems that most 7950's can OC to 7970 speeds.

You'll have to get a real OC tool to get to 7970 speeds though, and may have to up the voltage.

which tool would people recommend? I hear of many different ones such as MSI Afterburner and Sapphire Trixx. Is one better than the other?
