Default Fan speed after long idle on Sapphire 7970

I ran two monitors, 1920x1200 and 1600x1200. So, 7970 has higher temps at idle - known issue with 79xx cards.

What is interesting is if I start PC, fan stays at 20-22% and temps are around 58-60. If I ran BF3 and then stop, fan goes back to 20%.

But if PC stays idle for a long time, then activates, fan never goes lower than 31% and temps are around 46-48. Even after full power cycle with BF3. And 31% fan speed is kind of noisy.

Is it drivers? Or firmware?

Any thoughts are welcome.

This is weird. Both of my 7970s just turn off entirely during long idle...

I meant to say when PC wakes from idle and resumes normal operation upon user request, fan speeds up from idle too and does not go lower than 31% ever afer. During the idle fan does not rotate.

Sometimes when I was out of the room, and the computer was idling, I'd hear my 7970 spinning up every 30 seconds for a few seconds- In general, that reference cooler drove me bonkers all the time - especially in gaming (I use 2560X1440). My guess is drivers on the idle thing. Hehe- I said yesterday that I could finally stop moaning about the noise because I fanally got my waterblock on it, so last time..promise :-)

This is part of the reason with my 4870 and 6870 I manually control the fans to keep it in the mid to high 60-70 around 68c max if I can, easier to get used to, the fan is less likely to give out on it, and you have less issues to deal with.

It would be nice, if the fans they used Nvidia and AMD both had ramping speeds like a cars engine, it gets warmer warmer so the fan continously but steadily ramps the speeds up 1-2% at a time this way here its eaier to get used to the increasing noise, and its way less hard on the bearing to "spool" up. Nothing like almost dead quiet to a full rampage of jet noise :P

What about using something like afterburner to control the fan speed?

Babrbarosa, how difficult is it to replace stock cooler for waterblock and how much will it set me back? Apart from losing warranty, of course.
I actually do not mind stock cooler, I like the fact that it tackes hot air out of my case as 220W generating heat inside the case will heat up everything or make case fans work really hard and loud.
