My System Specs

Default Time to RMA my 5830

Looks like my ASUS DirectCU 5830 is toast.

Been having persistant BSOD's related to a video driver problem.

Updated my drivers to 12.1 this afternoon, and it happened shortly after.

I gpu fold 24/7 on that card.

Ran memtestcl and it found 1015 errors on random blocks. Soooo...looks like my card is going the way of the RMA.

Luckily, I ran my serial number and my card is still within the warranty period. I wonder what they'll send me as a replacement. 6870 if I'm lucky? They're the same price now as my 5830 was a year and a half ago.

It is really hard to say, maybe another 5830. I rma'd a XFX gt240 and thought they would for sure be sending me back a AMD card. nope, got another GT240. (It has been awhile since XFX sold for NV)

Well then I hope there are no more 5830's sitting in warehouses anywhere. I want a free upgrade, lol!

Probably another 5830 alas, But if they don't have anything left a 6850 is in your cards.

Its hard to say, I've seen people get lucky and get a good upgrade, and others get shafted.

Well, at least it's not a regression. The 5830 is still a solid performing card, about equal to a 6850, somehow, at least WRT compute. Friend of mine picked up a 6850 a couple of weeks ago, and my card actually seems to fold faster. His picks up a few FPS in games, but overall, they're quite similar.

Well its a newer architecture, so it will naturally work more efficently than previous gen. Plus do so with less power required.

Maybe you will get lucky,

In the meantime, threw in an old x800 that a friend had laying around. It's good enough to play media and surf the web, but unfortunately no gaming for me for a week or two

I have great friends though.

So, turns out ASUS had a 5830 DC lying around, so they sent that out. Who would have thunk??

Oh well, at least they replaced the card no questions asked, and no hassle after I fried the VRAM, so I'll count myself lucky!!!
