7970 vs 6970 vs 580
building a new computer.please suggest which GPU can take full load at max settings and please specify what those settings are

Should be able to play the best games, for example:

Crysis 2
Battlefield 3
Metro 2033
Dirt 3
Batman Arkham City

Also other features like:

GPU acceleration
Dual Display

1)does gtx 580 not do dual display as i have heard it needs SLI?

2)is the gap between CUDA and App that big, hasn't 7970 done any better?

3)who does better 3D and what are 3D tech's involved like passive and active? - i might buy passive 3d display from lg

7970? I find this thread a little odd. Is this a trick question? 7970 is the King ATM

its not about which card is the best,we know that 7970 is the best

its about will it be enough for my needs

i don't know that much about GPU's,although i have heard even the best nvidia 480 at its time wasn't enough for max settings

so is it that no graphic card is able to best out settings of a game or is that new 7970 is excessive?

atm 1080p

but i will buy another or 2 other displays later on -

i might also upgrade to thunderbolt display later this year after Adapter for thunder cable comes out

suggest separately for higher resolution display and multiple display and 1080p single display

Coach January 18, 2012 11:44 PM

If you wanna run multi display (eyefinity etc) then 7970 is a must IMHO. Metro 2033 will never be overpowered by a GPU even at 1080P.

EDIT: By never I mean with current cards and upcoming 6XX Nvidia cards.

A1: The GTX 580 by itself should be able to support 2 monitors if you do SLI you can only use 1 monitor while SLI mode is enabled(I think the new drivers automatically switch SLI mode when games are run). If you want to run more than 2 monitors you'd need another card GTX 580. The 7970 and 6970 support eyefinity (3 monitors) with only 1 card. If you want decent performance in eyefinity mode the 7970 is the obvious choice.
A2: It really all depends on what programs are being accelerated some are better coded for CUDA and some for APP What programs are you accelerating?
A3:I believe AMD only supports passive 3d through a 3rd party drive(don't know if this has change) and nVidia supports active 3d with shutter glasses.

For multi display, 7970.

Go with what your wallet can afford. I recently went through the same decision and I kept the 6970 my wife bought me. It's the best bang for the buck right now. Playing BF3 on ultra @ 1920x1200 no issues at all.

7970 is the best card you can get right now, period, overclocking it makes the ferrari into a lamb eating devil :O

It is just simply a very powerfull card, and depending on the model you get, they can actually support up to 6 monitors, through the use of the right connectors, Nvidia version of 3d is better as it stands, AMD version works just as well, unfortuantely AMD version does not have near as much titles support respectively.

All depends on you, I believe comparing the 580 vs 7970, considering thier pricing, the 7970 is just much more worth it, as nothing either side has out right now, as close to the same cost, can truly equal it, 580 3gb EVGA classified is probably the best example, the 7970 with a slight overclock trounces it easily in everything but HAWX 2 set at 2560x1440 and only faster by maybe 5fps at most, everything else 7970 is 5-20% faster, with the same settings, or much higher settings, then of course there is the noise, power, heat, all this the 7970 is actually quite decent considering how many horses are under the hood :)
