What do you think, for the price performance might be on par with the 580?

No idea, its probaby best to wait for the reviews.
IT might actually be on par if the 7970 only got 25% above a 580.

I'd imagine it would be competitive with the 580, but not a clear cut winner.

I would guess pretty close between 580 and 7950. The reviews will tell the whole story...look forward to seeing a review HWC.
