How much longer until the gtx280/285ish series becomes obsolete?

I am currently running two EVGA GTX280's in SLI. I haven't found a game yet in which brings my system to it's knees. I don't plan on upgrading anytime soon since Crysis2, Skyrim, All COD's, Deus Ex HR, Battlefield 2 and 3, and alike games run smoothly on virtually all ultra settings with the exception of PhysX in games such as MafiaII of course. The only OC'd component in my rig is the Core i5 750 @ 3.2Ghz with watercooling.

So how is everyone else managing the new games so far with these late 200series cards? I find the GTX 280-line very pleasing so far. I have owned these cards since early 2009, and love their investment value now that they have lastest and performed excellently up to the now 2012 era.

I'd say they were obsolete almost a generation ago.

Well timeline speaking, they are obsolete. They don't support DirectX 11

However, if they'll play a game at a FPS you like, at a resolution you want, with whatever eye candy you can't be without then they're not obsolete for you, yet.

Performance wise I'd say they became par with the arrival of the 560 ti. They lack a few modern features but aren't totally out of the game until the next generation.

OK well my choice of words was incorrect obviously by asking if they were obsolete. They are not obsolete at this point in time, as they are not useless and discard worthy with no potential. I agree that they dont have the dx11 features, which rules them out of the Dx11 topic. Dx10 still seems beautiful to most in Dx10 games.
Im asking those who still own a gtx280+ or above for future reference.

Depends on your res you are playing your games at. IF you are only using 1080p...then yeah they probably could last another year or two before you NEED to upgrade (or until a DX11 title comes out that you go "OMFG I need THAT"). Anything above 1080p...they are already obsolete. IF you consider power consumption vs performance..they have been obsolete for a long while.

My own personal perspective on vid cards relates more towards folding power (not even taking into account efficiency). The 275 card I had running pretty well outlived it's effective life once I could pick up a 450GTS for around $100 that would match or beat the PPD I was getting with the 275.

Its obsolete when its not doing what you want anymore. Whether that be its lack of DX11, its realatively high power consumption/performance compared to new cards, or the fps it gives you. For that reason it is already obsolete to some people and for others it will still last a few years. Your call.

I love my 2gb 265 I have never had one hickup with this thing and it plays at the max resolution that my 27"LCD can handle 1920x1080

Most everything we play these days is a console port. That card won't be obsolete until the next gen consoles come out and devs start actually leveraging the power of the new hardware.
