The one card I was actually impressed with is the XFX GeForce 8600 GTS *** Edition. This card fairs pretty good for a mid range card and comes in at not a bad price $248.88 at Direct Canada.

For someone like me who will be upgrading from an 9800 Pro this is a good deal.

That's just my 2 cents.

Spending another $100 and getting the 8800GTS makes much more sense. The 8600's are gutless and are going to be crap for gaming, especially over 1280X1024.

I think I have decided. After reading tons of reviews and weighing the pros and cons I have decided to go with the EVGA GeForce 7900 GS KO. It's $169.50 @ DC which is $80 cheaper than the XFX GeForce GTS *** .

The reasons I that brought me to this conclusion are the follow:
  1. I'm using XP and don't plan on upgrading to Vista for some time.
  2. DirectX 10 games won't be out for sometime, by that time I can upgrade.
  3. 7900 GS is OC friendly and when done can't annihilate the 8600 GTS

That's because it's on sale and has a MIR. But I'm not going to be getting when it is is on sale and I hate MIRs.

This thread makes me laugh, you sit here and trash a card that none of you have. I personally just bought an eVGA 8600GT "SuperClocked" and I can tell you that it is no slouch. It has a 576mhz core and its DDR3 is clocked at 1500mhz. I have been doing a burn in for over a week on this card and it has passed every test like a champ. I'm able to run every game at max without any problems. Since my LCD's native is 12x10, what do I care if it doesn't do well past this resolution? And it has 32 pipes not 16. I run Oblivion without any problems. I get the same slowdowns that players with higher end cards are complaining about. COD2 maxed with 8xas and 4xaa runs like butter. I run all my games at 10x7 because I like to be able to read the text on screen. Every game I have ran at this resolution and settings has not disappointed. I upgraded from a X1600pro and it doesn't even hold a candle to this card. Since this is a DX10 card, of course it will have growing pains. Most of these will be solved by a decent driver. So far, 160.03 has been the best. Once Nvidia releases a driver that fully supports all the features on this card, then have your say.

'Nuff said.

Do the newer Nvidia cards allow you to set HDR in Oblivion's game settings and then force AA & AF via drivers like the ATIs do?

This was a limitation of their DX9 cards, I'm wondering if that's changed with the DX10 cards.

Thanks for the input. What would be cool if you have the time is to do up a review of the 8600 GT in the Members Review section.
