8600 series cards are very high priced low end DX10 cards. Complete waste of money. Very sad indeed.

Fully agree what a disapointment, but once again there is nothing from ATI(AMD)

The GTS only has 32 shaders meaning it has no grunt. They have a 128-bit memory bus that will choke them at resolutions of 1280X1024 or higher. The GT and GS only have 16 shaders making them useless for gaming. Considering there are not even any DX10 games/apps out, they are a HUGE waste of coin and I'd wait for the next gen atleast before buying a DX10 card.

Right now, the X1950 PRO is the best budget DX9 card with power with the 7900GS right behind it. It really matters what company you want more since they are close to equal in performance.

EDIT: changed DX10 to DX9, sswilson's quote reflects my lack of paying attention, LOL!

XFX GeForce 7900GS or Sapphire X1950PRO

I think I'm gonna get the nvidia card to overclock it..

The 1950pro is indeed the best bang for your buck ATM, but neither of the cards you listed are DX10.

(My first one did have a DX10 logo on the box covered by a black sticker though...... :) ).

From Legion Hardware:

Not at all, the 8600 GT is a joke in my opinion and does not deserve to be part of the x600 GT series. If anything, what we have see here today should have been performance delivered by the 8500 GT, not the 8600 GT. The results really spoke for themselves, as the GeForce 8600 GT was 12% slower in Far Cry, 17% slower in F.E.A.R, 7% slower in X3: Reunion and 19.5% slower in Company of Heroes. The only two games that the 8600 GT came out on top in was Prey (15.5%) and Supreme Commander (27.5%), making a two out of six effort very poor indeed.

Ouch....

Personally, I just don't understand what games Nvidia is playing by selling such neutered cards. Sure AMD/ATI hasn't released a DX10 part, but since there is still no need, it makes no sense to seemingly rushthem to market as Nvidia has. I am still not impressed with ANY DX10 stuff considering it has not been tested in real life conditions so we don't know how it will perform. These first generation cards are looking like the 9700PRO fiasco all over again......
