Should I get 7970 ?

Hi , I'm really stumped on what to do , Here I have my new computer I just built and the 7000 series is already coming out and nvidia Kepler is on its way. Should I get a 7970 and sell my 6970 ? Or should I wait for nvidia Kepler and More 7000 series cards to come out ? I just don't want my Computer to fall behind, I kinda want to always keep it High end , but spending 550$ on a 7970 is risky espcially if a kepler card beats it for less or I can get a better deal like a 7950. Im wondering , should I keep 6970 and CF it and complete skip this series of gpu's or get one, 7970 or Nvidia Kepler card? Also My motherboard Supports Pci 3.0 and I want to take advantage of that and not miss out on it ? Also it might not belong in this topic but my mobo supports ivy bridge cause its 1155 but i heard only mid range ivy bridge are coming to it and not really good ones and basiclly i wan't to have everything future proofed for as long as possible, Im hoping to keep this board for about 2-3 years and upgrade as I go . So what should I do ? Thanks

1. There is no such thing as future proofed (just slightly delaying the inevitable).
2. I say just use what you have if it is giving you acceptable fps and upgrade when it is no longer doing what you want/need (since you just bought it I assume you bought a graphics card that is powerful enough for your needs).
3. If my assumption above is correct, then wait for kepler or later and see what cards are going to come next.

Imho, bump the 2600k mutiplier up if you want more cpu power and xfire the 6970 if your psu is has enough amps.

I wouldn't even concider a 7970 until you see what nvidia puts out, if you choose to replace the 6970 all together.

Alright , Thanks guys , I'm Just gonna Do what both of you say , #1 Wait to see what nvidia has and wait for the rest of the 7000 series (7950 might be unlock-able to 7970 I'm hopeing) , Uh What does bumping up the multiplier mean ? Like Over clocking ? If So I'm gonna do that , And Im gonna keep the 6970 until I find a good kepler or 7000 series card that is good for me or until the 6970 just cant handle games on high to maxed anymore .. Should I upgrade to 16gbs of ram also ? And One more thing, Can you estimate how long the i7 2600k will be good for gaming and overall a good processor ? (Im hoping for at least 2 years) thanks

Your 2600K will be good for gaming for 2-3 years easily, even more so when OC'ed. Lol I use a 3 year old 9650 and it didn't stumble in any game yet...

Unless ou have money to burn then I'd wait till your not happy with the 6970.. that card should keep you going for about another year and the chip for 3 - 5 years (oc'd and depending on what games / software comes out in the mean time)


on the ram.. not unless you do ALLOT of editing of LARGE images or videos or audio tracks.. for games and general use you shouldn't ever really go over 4GB or ram usage
(I usually use 3 and peak at 5 some times)

after seeing the results, I decided to CF with an open box 6950, it will beat 7970

As always wait to see what the competition brings. I will bet that nvidia will beat the 7970.

Your CF with 6970 & 6950 would last you perfectly fine till both Keplar and 7000 series both come out, then you'll have a variety of options and probably better pricing if you decide to upgrade then.
