gtx 580 questions yo, im gonna be making a new build in the new year about march, yes i know this is still far away haha. anyway down to it; im gonna be getting 2 gtx 580's to run in SLI, just wondering is it more convenient getting the 3gb versions? looking at the phantoms. ill be playing swtor, wow, BF3, BF2, darksiders, metro 2033. or is it not worth the extra money and just go with the 1.5gb versions? anyone recommend good waterblocks for both versions while were at it i guess?? cheers. |
Seeing as you will be running presumably at 1080p there is no real point to waste the money on the 3GB versions. You really only see a benefit of the extra vRAM if you are running 2560 x 1440 or more importantly 5670 x 1080 or higher (aka 3 monitor gaming) |
BF3 does use a little more than 1.5GB of Vram but that's only BF3 so really get the 1.5GB version since its cheaper and some of them could have higher clocks and just plain better |
In March, new cards will be out, and they will (most likely) be more efficient, while offering the same or better performance. Anwyays, for 1080p, you don't need more than 1.5gb of VRAM, unless you play BF3. |

You don't need the 3 Gb versions unless multi-monitor gaming , as Arinoth said. You won't be able to wait forever tho , 580's are being sold off , keep your eyes open for sales in the next few months. :thumb: |
thanks a heap guys, yeah ill stick with the 1.5gb versions for now; unless of course GTX 6** series or ATI 7*** series is released. ohh forgot to say about my resolution, gonna be getting a 32" or 30" tv as my monitor i think thats still 1080p though! thanks again guys! |
Are you running surround? If you are you should go with the 3gb, i have a gainward gtx 580 phantom and they are pretty cool(and cheap). Plus some games like Metro 2033 need the extra 1.5 gb in sli... |
If you can, consider waiting shaznuts, you would expect a price drop of 580's once the 7970 becomes more widely available: http://www.hardwarecanucks.com/forum...gb-review.html |
He said he wasn't building until march. |
