Thanks for the advice guys,

About the MSI Lightning, I've read that they sometimes develop a heat issue after a few months. Have you experienced this at all?

on the twin frozer cooler thats highly unlikely they are close to the best air cooler there is right now. but for a single card go for the 6970 the extra ram will be a god send because i game at 1680x1050 and on newer games i run out of ram regularly on my 6870 so i cant run AA on my games now

I had a card that couldn't have been working correctly and I had to RMA it with the retailer. It was replaced quickly and I have had no problems at all. The card I had would get well into the 90's with a single card setup playing Battlefield 3 or Crysis 2. The replacement card would top out in the high 70's. I added a second one and the top one runs hotter than it use to but this is normal in crossfire and sli setups. There was about a 5-8C increase. Bottom card never goes past 75C though. This is under very high GPU usage. Most games keep the cards in the 60-70C range.

A single, better card is always the better way to go IMO. You avoid huge volumes of hassle with dual card drivers and game optimization. (Been down that road and I hate it.) I'd personally go with either the single 6970 just because you get the best value for your money with the larger buffer. But if you're gaming in 1080p, a 570 will do nicely as well. No matter how you slice it though, they'll both handle any game you throw at them in 1080p completely maxed out. Higher res means you'll likely think more about more memory though, so you're back to the 6970.

so just a single MSI 6970 Lightning will do me for quite some time on its own? I don't mind not needing to dual card to get ultra settings if i don't have to

Grab that lightning IMO over a 560ti, and yes I run 2x6970 DCII in xfire on a p67 and tight fit TBH if I was using a different case I Don't know about temps, mine load at 80+c considering when I had the single 6970 it was loading at 55-62c.
As Sam I had fan rattle from one of my dcii and a minor bend to the shroud fixed it fine.

That said I wish the lightnings would have been in stock when I purchased mine.
