500w PSU with 6870?

Hey guys

Is my PSU (Thermaltake Purepower 500w) enough to run a 6870 along with my current setup (Gigabyte 880GA-UD3H , Phenom X4 955 BE @ stock clocks, 4Gb G.Skill Ripjaw 1333Mhz)? Or do I need to look for something lower than that?

Voltage calculator says 433w.

It says this on the newegg page:

System requirements: 500 Watt or greater power supply

Also I know my PSU only has 1x6 pin connector...but I guess I can buy an adapter for one of my other plugs?

A quality 500w PSU would be fine. I would not recommend it on yours.

They were only able to pull 375 watts from it and at 310w it was out of ATX spec for 12v rail.

Thanks yea I read that review and decided to look for another PSU and maybe downgrade to a 6850 instead of a 6870 only because I hear it's very good value and only performs slightly worse than the 6870...

Any good deals on PSU's right now? Ughh I would rather keep it cheap I wasn't expecting to buy a PSU right now...

Not a lot of deals out there right now on power supplies. NCIX.ca has black friday sales starting tonight. I would guess you should be able to get a suitable one on sale there when that starts.

Corsair Builder series 500W V2 would probably fit the bill perfectly. Go with that and your 6870 or a 6850 BE from XFX.

Yeah, gives you an extra 100W. They are very good budget oriented PSU's. I've sucessfuly used 4 so far with zero issues.

They are fine PSU's.
People on other site sometimes compare budget to bleeding edge in unfair comparision.

That will give you a good range and field of very good PSU's.

Given the current sales, and your want for a budget 500+w power supply I would suggest either the 500w antec earthwatts linked to above for $49.99, or if you could swing an extra $10 then I suggest this Antec High current gamer 620w for $59.99.

The corsair builder series are a great budget power supply that have a low normal price (hence why it was suggested above), but I would take one of these over it (sale prices put them in your range).
