My System Specs

Default Do I need a new gpu?

Hi guys,

I'm upgrading from a 22" 1680x1050 panel to a 24" 1920x1200. My current card is the HD 5850 1GB, and it runs most games at high settings (BF3 at medium) pretty well. Should I be looking to upgrade my video card? Or will the fps hit be negligible?

Thoughts? Thanks!

Your fps will obviously drop a bit due to the higher resolution of the new monitor. I think you would have to see if the 5850 yields acceptable framerates for your games at the new resolution. If not then maybe look for a gtx 570 or 6970.

I agree, perhaps go with a 570 just as i think it holds better value! Can be OCed to performance of 580, soo.....I have 570 Asus DirectCU II with the triple slot cooler, great choice of card ONLY if you plan to do single card setup. In retrospect now, should have purchased dual slot so i could SLI these bad boys...

You should be fine, the 5850 has alot of shader and is actually better meant for 1920x1080, the 5830 on the other hand would be a little underpowered to do so.

You could always overclock it some to gain back some of the FPS you might lose.

If you were looking at new cards, the best cards for the $ are 560ti, 6950 2gb model such as XFX dual fan XXX model(830 core clock) or one of the GTX570. All of these cards are a bump overtop of the 5850.

I personally would try it out first, adjust the Cat center settings properly to make the best use of the card, and worse comes to worse, overclock it some, it still is a very powerfull card to begin with. One of the newer cards would be faster in certain regards, however, it is coming awfully close to new cards being placed on the shelf, hold off if you can, you probably will get an even better deal if you go out and buy a new one(they will price drop to clear the shelves after all)

Well, I currently run a 5830 with 1920x1200 resolution. On every game except BF3 I can run most of the highest settings and get decent frame rates (35-45).

When I play BF3, High settings run, but my frame rates drop down to the 20's. In order to get acceptable frame rates, I have to drop the settings down to Medium. Since the 5850 is the same card as the 5830 but with all of its shaders unlocked, you should be able to do even better.

If you don't want to spend any money, don't bother until the next generation of games comes out. The card you have now is just fine. At the very worst, it should hold out until the next generation of vid cards (28nm) come out.

I can run most games at high quality setting at 1920x1200 on my 27" with my 4870 (mild overclock 750 gpu/1000 mem) so I don' think you would have too many problems.

Im sure you will be fine and dont need a new graphics card. Just try out the 5850 on the monitor first and see how it runs

Unless you need to play on high settings with games like BF3, Metro, etc. you'll be fine. My brother is using my old GTX 260 Core 216 @ 1920x1200 and he's able to run BF3 relatively smoothly on medium settings with certain parameters dialed down or off.

Frames will still be within the same ball park from my experience. Would hold off til after the new year for the newer cards forsurely. Not like anything is coming out more taxing then BF3 til some time next years anyways.
