Default Upg. from 6870. Worth it or wait?

I'm looking at a 6970, since I don't ever plan on going dual card and I only run a single monitor, but I'm wondering if I should just deal with it and wait for the eventual HD7xxx series, which shouldn't be too far off.

Thoughts?

Edit: I tend to only run at 1920x1080. I might expand to two monitors one of these days (I miss having it), but it's not a primary concern right now.

Depends on how long you want to wait really. The 7xxx series won't be out until Q1 2012, and with that they may not even release the high end cards first *rumour*

I just 2 nights ago upgraded to a 6970 from a 6870. I don't feel like waiting till Q2. Ime things are always delayed, so when they say Q1(which I believe is purely rumor, correct me if I'm wrong please), I see Q2. I really don't feel like waiting that long, and in the event I really do want to jump to say a 7970, I will just sell my 6970 and use the money towards a new one and take a bit of a $$ loss.

It's really up to you like Arinoth says.

If all you ever do is wait, then you'll never get up to date.
I myself did this long ago and just said to heck with it I'll upgrade now.

Sometimes you take a bit of a loss, but its usually not that bad at all.

I use an overclocked 6870, 965 core and 1128 memory, it can play everything I throw at it, a 6950/6970 no doubt are more powerfull, but then again so would CF 6870s, personally I would just wait lower end ones maybe the 7870 by christmas time, otherwise early into the new year, I would wait, see what they bring out, you might kick yourself for not saving the coin for something alot better.

That and its not like its a slow gpu, there is faster, always is, but its far from slow if used the way it should be, if you need a boost, just overclock it, just up the fan speed a little bit to compensate, most 6870 will do around 960 or more on the core and 1130 or more on the memory, this gains 15-22fps in most games that I play compared to the stock 913/1050 core/mem

You should wait, if this was 5-6 months ago, then I would agree that a 6970 might be worthwhile. Now, the 7xxx is so close, 28nm process, estimated to be 40% faster, the other 6xxx cards are not worth it anymore to upgrade to.

Soo close? You guys do realize its delayed until next year Q1, as well as don't know if the high end cards will actually come out first. This means it could be until Q2 before we see the high end cards, making it a 5-6 month away gap sort of...

I think the fact that a this time of the year it was raining with new cards for the last couple of years, so people were kind of expecting the same ever since...

That's what I was thinking when I saw how many times it's been (rumored) delayed.

And considering the "rumored" specs show that the HD7870, which will probably be the launch card of the series, is just a 6970 with half the power consumption (and slightly higher clocks), grabbing the 6970 and waiting it out for that 7970 might be the way to go.

I can't remember when I actually bought this 6870. I bought it off Arinoth (two of them actually), and I know it wasn't too long ago, but for some reason it just felt like "Nope, it's been long enough, upgrade time". Especially since my plan of buying storage went down the drain with the shortage and whatnot.

There will always be a way to upgrade, the question is: do you need it?

Are the games you are playing now not playing the way you want them to?

Is the cost of the new card (minus the money from selling your current) worth the expected game performance increase?

I would expect that a 6870 will play almost any game at ultra settings at 1920x1080, I know mine does. So for me, the expected game performance boost is next to nothing, therefore upgrading is not worth it. The upgrade would be purely for bragging rights.
