My System Specs

Default 9600 gt

I was looking at the add for the Nvid 9600 card and was thinking of picking one up but I am a little confused becasue the His Radeon HD 3870 ICEQ3 775MHZ 512MB 256BIT GDDR4 has 320 stream processing units and the 9600 has only 64 Stream Processors now I know that Number wise that is a huge difference but what about gaming wise the 9600 is almost $70. cheaper do you think that it is worth save 70 for more processing?

There are more factors than just the amount of stream processors that determines a video card's performance.

I would opt for the 9600GT and overclock it if the price difference between it and a HD3870 was $70.

yeah the 9600 GT beats the HD3870 and can beat the 8800 GT if you overclock the 9600 GT.

HD3870 was actually 10 bucks cheaper than 9600GT when I bought it last week. Got the HIS for $200 which beats the 9600GT in most tests according to anand:

From a performance standpoint, the Radeon HD 3870 comes out slightly ahead by outperforming the 9600 GT in one more game (and two benchmarks). The 9600 GT, although winning fewer benchmarks, manages a higher margin of victory in those games that it does win in. Performance issues in Quake Wars and Call of Duty 4 give the nod to NVIDIA, especially when you take into account a lower average selling price for the 9600 GT.

AnandTech: When the Smoke Clears & Prices Settle: GeForce 9600 GT vs. Radeon HD 3870

I thought, a little bit better for 10 bucks cheaper FTW :)

Price and performance are both comparable.

Yup, and Radeon stream processors are quite a bit different than GeForce ones, because of the unified shaders. So on games that aren't built for them (which is most games), the 9600GT can get more performance even with a lot less stream processors.

I want either or at this point i am running an 8600 gt and although it does the job I want to upgrade so badly it hurts. Having no money is hurdle I am having an impossible time tackling though... I cannot think of a way to get enough money to buy either though so all i can do is rant and dream...

Hey guys, between these which would you pick?

8800GT 512 (Galaxy $190)

HD 3870 (HIS $215)

9600GT (Galaxy $160)

Is it worth the extra $$$ to with the 8800GT 512?

I recommended the XFX Geforce9600GT for my brother a few days ago. He's going up from a XFX Geforce7300GS, guess he'll get some more fpses in his games, soon. 8-)

Although the rest of the system he has isn't so impressive but the graphics card is a very important component this days in pc computer games.

I think I will go for a card from ATi in the future.

My past graphic cards:
ATi Radeon9600SE(in 2003), ATi Radeon9800XT(in 2004), nVidia Geforce7800GS(in 2007).
