I'd say 1 High end Card over 2 Lower, get the 6970 and you can always add another later.

I was thinking single card setup, is the gtx580 worth 100$ more than a 6970?

The 580 is a better card. But imo it really isn't worth 100$ more.
But if you play games that use PhysX definitely worth looking into then.

I'd definately go single. The 6970 is a great card but I'm not so sure that I wouldn't recommend the GTX 570... it seems to fare better with MSAA and loaded up settings in a few games.

The only thing that concerns me with the GTX 570 is the 1.28GB of ram. I don't know if it matters but it seems that games lately have really started using up more VRAM.

Get the CF 6870 don't listen to the under educated who tell you it doesn't work well.
I have a few systems at the moment and my dual 6870 system kicks the crap out of even my 6970 and 580 systems.

I don't really like you calling people here under educated. Driver support for the 68xx series has been terrible. There weren't proper drivers for a long time at release, despite the cards being on the market. Many long time members have expressed how they have been unsatisfied with ATIs drivers for the 68xx.

Also, why are you selling your 6870s if they are sooo great?

To op:
Do as suggested, if single gpu forever, 6970, if dual gpu later, 570.
If multi-monitor ever, 6970, due to the extra ram.

I have dual 6870's and I will tell you they will not run BF3 maxed out at a good fps at 1920x1200. I have same resolution montiro. I was getting average of I think 25 fps on maxed out settings. I just play on Auto now a mix of ultra and high no AA.

All my Dual ATI solutions were sold, due to high incidents of Driver issues and X-fire breaking...

Yeah I am so not sold on this generation of Cards for Xfire.
Get the 6970 or SLI a pair of 570's, 560TI's (or 448's if they ever come out).
