Alpha had lot of the graphics toned down, beta would be more of a benchmark then alpha.

Anyways, you'll def get better frames with 570 - you should be comparing 6970 v 570 rather than 6950. The 6950 is great for bang/buck though. I just took a look at prices on shopbot and you can grab a 570 for cheaper than the 6970, but only by a slight margin. If you wanted 3D go for 570, if you wanted tri-screen support go for 6970, but other than that whichever you decide you'll most likely be able to max BF3. 6950 you might have to tone down AA/AF and even shaders.

So, just so I'm clear, feature for feature the two cards (6970 and the 570) are virtually identical other than nVidia's 3D support (don't care) and AMD's Eyefinity (to expensive)?

I believe amd has 3d support, and Nvidia has 3 monitor support, although nvidia requires two cards in SLI to do this. If you are strictly gaming, then they have about the same features, the 570 has physx support though. For performance, the 570 will do better in most games, and it appears BF3 is one of those.

The 6970 is a more powerful card then the 570, hands down, the 6950 is about the same as the 570.

If the choice is between a 570 and a 6950 I would choose the 570.
If its between a 570 and a 6970, i'd go with the 6970 for the more power and vRam

Price wise there's not really a whole lot of comparisons to be made. A quick search shows:

AMD 6970 = $350USD
AMD 6950 = $250USD
nVidia 570 = $350USD
nVidia 580 = $450USD

The 6950 is a full $100 less expensive than the 570.

Went with the 6950 that I got from a friend for $200, because although I've always been an Nvidia fan, the price difference was too much for me to ignore. It gives around 35FPS average on the BF3 beta running at 1920x1080 and everything at Ultra. It dips to 27ish sometimes, but so far I'm happy with it.

I'll probably pick up a second one in a few weeks for crossfire.
