Unlocking 2 HD 6950's + Overclocking, is it possible?

Heya guys, I'm going to be building a PC soon for gaming obviously, I'm asking a graphics card question after all http://img.tomshardware.com/forum/uk...s/pt1cable.gif

Before I get to my couple of questions about the Graphics cards, here's some helpful information about the other specs which the computer will contain:

Processor/CPU:
Intel core i5 2500k

Motherboard:
Asus P8Z68-V PRO

RAM/MEMORY:
GSKILL Ripjaws X Series 8GB (DDR3 1600 MHZ)

Basically, what I'm asking for here is, I've been debating what GPU(s) to put in my planned gaming machine. The resolution which I will be playing at is 1920x1080.
I will be gaming heavily, some of the most (intensive?) games which have yet to be released, which I'll play will Include Battlefield 3, Skyrim, Mass Effect 3, Borderlands 2, RAGE, DOTA 2, Guild Wars 2... you know the deal http://img.tomshardware.com/forum/uk/icones/tongue.gif

So I have been debating which Cards to go with:
the GTX 570's in sli (usually... about $340 each) (I found they didn't outperform the HD 6950's let alone the HD 6970's and costed about $100 more to get them both)

or the HD 6950 2GBs in CFX which are $299.99 each (The HIS ones http://img.tomshardware.com/forum/uk/icones/tongue.gif)

I have heard of the 2GBs and their Dual Bios and such, and how I can flash them to HD 6970's (Just unlocks shaders right? need some clarification on this)

If I was to unlock these 2 cards to HD 6970's, could I still overclock them when they are 6970's?

Also, 2 of the unlocked cards work in crossfire right? What If I wanted to do considerable overclocking to them both, will this work? (stupid question I know http://img.tomshardware.com/forum/uk...ilies/ange.gif )

Also here's a notice: I will have a beefy high quality PSU so the PSU will not be an issue! thank you guys for your input! http://img.tomshardware.com/forum/uk/icones/wink.gif

i would actually buy used thats already been successfully unlocked,if it were me :)

just make sure the warranty is carried forward or the seller is a nice guy and not some bastuge fraud.

havimg said that, you may want to give one a try first, less you were to find an unlocked pair.

clocking wise there are never guarantees, except for retail cpus perhaps ,known to get to at least x.x ghz on average,or better.

Why HIS? Are they still referenece cards? $299 for a 6950 seems high, its more than I paid 8 months ago.

1080p doesn't require 570 in SLI. its too low of a resolution. Single 570 will be fine even for your future games.

I've successfully unlocked 6 reference 6950's (all exact same model) I am able to run them at 975 with a bump in voltage to 1.250v these are running 100% 24/7. Was also able to do 1000 at the full 1.300v allowed by Trixx, all of this with under clocked memory at 300 (not effecting what I'm doing with them, but not sure of memory limits I never tried them)

I don't have any gaming benchmarks for ya but as far as bitcoin mining goes a stock 6950 does about 330mhash, unlocked up to 360mash, over clocked to 975 gets 405mhash. So I'm about 23% up on a stock card as far as bitcoin mining goes. These are sapphire 2gb models, they were about $230 a couple months ago, brand new on eBay.

Then I got a newer revision of the 2gb sapphire 6950, one large fan in the middle. No dual bios so I haven't tried the unlock, but it only does 925 stable, 370mhash.

I was able to successfully unlock my Asus 6950 2GB card, the bios I used had the unlocked shaders (of course!) plus a slight speed increase, and I've had no issues with it at all.
