What do you guys and gals think?

So the new AMD and Nvidia GPU's are supposed to be coming out at the end of this year and at the beginning of next year respectively. Nvidia's gtx 6xx series is apparently supposed to be twice as fast as their predecessors so AMD should be close if they plan on competing.

So my question is at this point in the year do you think it is worth it to wait the 3-5 months for AMD's new GPU's or even the 5-7 months for Nvidia's.

Consider possibilities like buying a lower end card now to hold you over to newer card releases (if you are building new now) or holding off upgrading until the new cards are released even though you want to upgrade for BF3 lol

Nvidia always claim their next series is gonna be twice as fast and it's been 3 time it's pure false. IMO it will be on both side anew version of the actual architecture with a normal performance boost. I would buy a 5X or a 6XXX card now sinec they will be cheap due to the next coming card.

But what about power consumption and heat differences and along with those possible volume differences? Do you think that could be enough to wait for?

Do a 580 use less power than a 285? nop. So power consumption is biased, same with eat, do a 580 is cooler than a 285? again the answer is no.

Assuming all goes well the next gen cards will have lower power consumption than the previous generation, but you can look to the releases of the ATI Radeon 2900XT and nVidia GeForce GTX 465 / 470 / 480 as examples where this wasn't the case. You seem to be looking for excuses to wait, so you can likely wait ;)

Will a new GPU boost performance in games you currently own enough for you to care? If so, get a new GPU now / start looking for deals.
If you get a new GPU now, will you have to wait until you get BF3 for you to benefit from it? If that's the case, wait for the performance reviews / stable drivers for that game to come out, then make a more informed decision.

Well I am in this situation but I have made my decision I more started this thread to try and get people to talk because the forums feels so slow these days.

@martin yeah but a GTX 580 crushes the 285 in performance. You could back off the GTX 580 make it run only twice as fast and then have in run cooler and quieter.

I would wait. Enjoy what you've got now as much as you can, and buy a new one when you'll know the performances of the cards & the games requirements...

What I mean is that when you use them they both use about the same power ( not regarding performance ) and rune about the same temp. Nxt gen will probably have the same power use for more performance and same temp for more performance.

If your current card is getting you by, then you should wait. If you are not getting what you want/need out of your current setup, then upgrade. There is always something new and better just around the corner.
