Default EVGA GeForce GTX 580 3GB Review Comment Thread

In the last few months it has seemed like custom GTX 580 cards are being launched at a nearly breakneck space. Amid the hoopla surrounding some high profile launches from MSI, Gigabyte and ASUS, EVGA silently introduced their own "upgraded" GTX 580 which sports 3GB of GDDR5. While it shuns higher clock speeds and upgraded cooling, EVGA backs it up with their legendary Lifetime Warranty. But will this be enough?

I don't think i've bitched about it hahahahaha

I feel that this review , while good as usual, doesn't do justice to what the 3 GB has potential for; 3D Surround

I would of liked to see some 3d and/or surround benchmarks, but i can wait for another time *hint hint*

EVGA refused to send us another card...even a loaner.

HOWEVER, you'll run smack into a rendering bottleneck long before the memory gets saturated. Sure, 3GB MAY give you double the framerates in 3D Vision Surround. BUT, if the stock card is running at 15 FPS with dips down to 3 and the 3GB card is running 30 average with dips down to 6-8, what's the use? The game would still be unplayable, and that's assuming a doubling of framerates.

Could you test this with an MSI/Gigabyte 3GB card to make sure?

Sure! Wanna send one? Reference clocked since underclocking really messes up SLI results.

Ahh gotcha ;p Thought you had a 3GB card still, and did not know about the SLI limitation.

Well, I must admit that the 3GB memory was a deal maker 4 me, I couldn't wait and got a 2nd 1 1/2GB ref. card 4 sli. With the 3GB version as the conclusion states, the only real noticeable difference

appeared 2 b when running at the extreme end of enthusiast's systems, therefore as dang said, is it really worth the price premium?

SKY nailed it with the comment regarding 3D and pricing, trim the price and it could be a viable alternative. Again, another member curious 2 c how they would've performed in SLI.

Until I go multi monitor 3D, these cards don't really give me any reason 2 switch, and as stated, they don't make that much of a difference in that config. anyway.

Considering we're seeing an architectural bottleneck at 2650 x 1600, I can't see 3GB being an improvement at 5760 x 1080 and above. But maybe I'll put my money where my mouth is and order a Zotac GTX 580 3GB...since it's a good $50 less than the EVGA version: Newegg.ca - ZOTAC ZT-50103-10P GeForce GTX 580 (Fermi) 3G 384-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready SLI Support Video Card

Time to re-do this review Skymtl. On my single 30" monitor running at 2560x1600 my sli 580 3gigs are getting around 1950-2000 mb vram usage, while playing Crysis 2 (DX11 patch) Also, you might want to really try and use the card as intended and put it in a tri monitor setup to see how it stacks up against the other cards. I know you made a quick mention to it but without that testing is this review even VALID?!?
