hands down.

edit : the core count is heavier on the 8800's side. the rest(ram size and speed) can be the same.
also single slot video cards can be quite..loud..quite.

8800GT/9800GT or 9600GT. That depends on your gaming resolution. Anything under 12xx,1xxx these preform pretty much same give a few fps differences. For any resolution higher the 112 cores will truly show its potentials.

I think it was about 20-40% performance increase. It has bee way too long since I own both of those cards.

The MSI you mention has a zalman cooler, so even at full load it can be some what quiet. The reference XFX card cooler so it might be a bit hot and loud during load.

I used to own a 8800 GT Alpha Dog edition from XFX and believe you me at full throttle it sounds like a jet engine. It's up to you for sure but you might find it annoying in the long run. What I did with mine is change the heat sink for around 20 $.

I say 8800GT Alpha Dog ed. because it is already pre overclocked by XFX. I'm not too sure, but i think a game is included in the package.

I thought it was only ~15% difference btw 8800GT and 9600GT.

if everything is stock,in some games/eye candy situations the difference can be much more than 15% :)
