Default Worth it to buy a GTX580 this late?

Just wondering what your guy's thoughts are on buying a GTX580 this late after release. I'm simply not happy with Crossfire and figure maybe it's time to go "green" again

Right now I have dual HD5870s driving my U2711 (2560x1440). I'm assuming the 1.5GB GTX580 would be able to handle this fine and be capable of playing majority of current and upcoming games (namely BF3) at high/max settings? I don't need a ton of AA, but at least 2x, ideally 4x (or more).

However the 3GB GTX580 seems tempting too, but very limited stock its seems and not too sure if 2560x1440 truly needs that much VRAM. Plus it seems waterblocks are a bit harder to come by if I go that route...

But I'm cautious...spending $500 on an "old" video card seems like a bad idea. I feel I'll get burned as the GTX6xx or HD7xxx (or whatever they call them) will come out maybe in Q4? In which case I should just wait for those as I technically don't need it until that time frame. However I have the funds to do it this summer.

damn... 580 is old already? :\ I just bought a 570

If you can hold out and get by with your current config (which I think you can), i'd wait it out for the new series of cards.

It's always a hard decision because no one wants to buy hardware and have it obsolete by new releases a few days, weeks, months later but that's part of the game. You have to keep it in mine but buying for present times is pretty much the only way to go since there is always something new on the horizon. I guess it all depends on what it means to you. GTX 580 are not exactly cheap and is it worth it over you current setup? Personally, I rather have a mid-high end card and change it more often with less money loss than buying a high end card. If money is not a problem then go ahead why not.

Yup that is about it. I use a U2711 and in the past month tried a GTX 580 while my two 570 were out for RMA. The 580 could play everything I wanted with decent AA and still hold 60FPS. I could have bought the 580 for $375 but decided to go back to my 570 SLI once they came back from RMA. I am not sure that I made the correct move there but oh well... Point is I think you will like it. oh FWIW I also tried 6970 CFX and could not stand it bc of AMD drivers and crap scaling in some games like BC2 where one 580 gave me considerably better gameplay.

I know how you feel, I bought a 480 and a couple months down the road the 580 came out.
But I'm not really disappointed because it still performs like a beast. Even with games in 3D.
I don't consider the 580 to be an old card though. If you buy you won't be disappointed.

For my current cards, I'd probably cycle them through my household actually. I don't think I'd really get much for them these days. And one of them has a waterblock which would be an even tougher sell. It seems most people are more looking at 68xx and 69xx cards.

IMO the GTX580 is "old". It came out around November 2010? So it's basically 6 months old and I'm assuming new stuff should be on the horizon soon. Likewise, my HD5870s are about 20 months old as it was released in September 2009 (though I bought in March 2010). So if I follow my purchase habits, I bought my 5870 after 6 months from release which is where the GTX580 sits currently

And yeah, I'm well aware of the whole, "just buy it" or "no, keep waiting" sides of things. Though it seems everything I've bought has been quite a few months after release (i7 920, 5870, etc) and I'm sure some would say I bought at the nearly the worst times possible

Anyhow, I'd be learning towards the EVGA Superclocked 1.5GB GTX580 along with an EK or Koolance fullcover block. I'm assuming the SC model would have a better core that would net higher overclocks than the normal model. It's just hard to drop $600 if it's going to be outdated soon.

Hey JD. I am in the EXACT same boat as you. I am running 2x 5870s and have been debating this question for some time. I decided that I am going to wait for the 6xx since really this setup runs any game I want it to right now.

I've running 2x Evga GTX 580 SC's on my U2711 for quite awhile now and all games run / scale beautifully, so well in fact that I will be skipping the next GPU generation.....and you guys know I never do this!!!!
Too bad I just sold one of em (was running Tri Sli) for $420 complete with backplate n high flow air bracket!!!!
The 580's are truly great cards for both performance and temps!!!
Stop procrastinating and pick one or two up, you won't be disappointed!!!
