I'd say as suggested above to find a used one, I can get BNIB locally on kijiji & CL here for 380-420$ CDN

"Late"? Methinks not. A GTX 580 will be good for at least another two years due to the slow acceptance of DX11, etc.

It's always tempting to play the waiting game or think what you have isn't enough, etc... I would personally wait unless you find the CF problems are just too annoying. If you do get a GTX 580, I'm sure it will be strong enough for quite some time.

Flipping between numbers of the GTX570, 580 and HD6970, it seems like a tough call.

Does the GTX580 really offer enough bang for it's $100 price increase? The HD6970 seems to trade blows with the GTX580 and aimed directly at the GTX570.

The more I contemplate, the more I lean towards "no" when I was originally thinking "yes".

I think it would be worth it just from a single-GPU standpoint. Furthermore, even when new cards do come out, it's not like the GTX 580 all of a sudden won't be able to play new games at 60FPS on high settings. Also, GTX 580 won't lose so much resale value that you'll feel bad if you sell it and move onto the newest.

I do not trust the "numbers", according to them 6950/70's in cfx should pwn and so I bought two 6950 for CFX and they did not! I could go on but like I said earlier, a single 580 is wise move.

For me I usually find that I have to skip at least one generation for my purchase to seem worth it. I bought a 5850 and after reading the 6950 results it wasn't even close to making me want to upgrade. My last card before the 5850 was the 8800 GTS 640MB.

^^^^^^ The 580 SC cards OC'd to 875 /2150 are in a League of their own, sure they're pricey, but @ 2560x1440 Res with all the eye candy cranked......that's what I don't mind paying for!!
