My System Specs

Default MSI Radeon HD 6950 Twin Frozr III

Is that card unlockable to a 6970?
If so, can you still overclock it and make it a super fast card?

If you do both of the above listed things, is there a card of the same value and faster than the card above when you oc it??

So is like a gtx 570 overclocked faster than a 6950 unlocked to 6970 and overclocked?

Edit: I just read that it is possible, but it is a gamble...
And the temps are very high...

If you use 1920x1200 or less, the 570 will be faster. At higher resolutions the 2GB buffer of the 69XX can come into play, but from what I've seen the 570 overclocks better than the high end radeons.

Yes it is unlockable but it is a game of chance. If you want to get the best chances stick with the 2GB version. The GTX 560 Ti is a direct competitor to the locked HD6950 and it costs about the same with the 1GB version. The GTX570 would be a good choice if you do not want to take the risk of unlocking the HD6950. The temps shouldn't be that high with the Twin Frozr II.

I doubt you'll have any problems keeping the temps within normal specs with the frozr cooler so long as you're willing to set a custom fan profile.
That said, according to reviews across the net, performance gains from unlocking the shaders on the 6950 are only about 2%, whereas the overclock to 6970 specs is reportedly what gives it the extra grunt. I can't confirm this personally, but my bro has an unlocked 6950 so if you want I might be able to get him to check it out.
