My System Specs

Default duel 6970s or single 6990

I am sorry if this has been discussed before but I need to get my post up and new to the site.

I currently have a MSI N460GTX Cyclone 1g card and was looking into upgrading into the newer cards. My current computer is my first new build in almost 5 or more years and I have never sli or crossfired any of my cards due to that just didn't really exist in my time. (yes that long ago) My current build is a Asus Formula 4 with a 955be 8g(4x2) Mushkin Redline ram with a single 460. Any comments of what would be better duel 6970s or a single 6990 with current drivers? I have watch some reviews and they never really compair duel 6970 in crossfire vs a 6990 always 6990 vs 590 nvidia.

I also want to run eyefinity on three asus 1080p lcds
Thanks for any info

Honestly I'd take dual 6970s. 6990s would be needed more for 3x 2560x1600 resolutions (and higher). Two 6970s will be quieter, and they will outperform a single 6990 anyways.

yep HD6990 fan noise is brutal. I wish AMD would stop using those blower style fans.

The downside with 6970 x 2 is that it will cost a lot more considering they cost $350 + active DP to HDMI/DVI adapter. HD6990 comes with the adapters needed for Eyefinity out of the box. I wish 6970 CFX didn't require DP for eyefinity :(

I never thought of 6950 unlocked but is it a sure thing or is it a roll of the dice to get two that unlock?

reference 2gb models, and i mean reference,do unlock. looks like 1gb models do that too,looks..but stick with 2gb models
for better fps at high resolutions across several monitors.

I went the 6970 route because of the higher stable overclocks that it is capable of. No one yet knows the Long-Term effects of OCing an unlocked 6950 yet.

Just keep the Geforce GTX 460. Thanks to the consoles it is still fast enough.
