hmm, then even a gtx 460/hd6850 will be decent in most games with enough eye candy :

I was actually contemplating getting one of the higher end cards like the GeForce 570 or 580, although do you think that would be overkill seeing as i only have a 2.8 ghz core i5 quad core and 6gb ram?

hmmm....those will be stronger, you will be able to play most games with decent eye candy on 1920x1080 and more,
but bang per buck a bit on the lower side.

but,to answer your question, those two will be held back by your cpu at stock, yes.

ati cards fare better with 'slower' cpus vs nvidia ones, for some reason.

what i would do though, is get myself a nice and cheap 1920x1080 lcd, 23 incher leds can be had for under 200 bucks,
while 24 inchers non leds even cheaper.

hmm i didnt know that (the nvidia is held back more by "slower" cpus) but this almost makes me want to wait until i have the money to upgrade to the newer cpu/motherboards before i attempt to upgrade my video card because technology gets better so quickly i feel that i would be in the same situation a year from now if i upgrade to a 6870 now.

ugh.

Just get whatever video card you want now. you're not doing to create any bottlenecks or anything, and there's no such thing as overkill with what you have. The gaming technology will catch up, and you have the hardware to adequately feed a high end card with room to spare. What are you running right now, a single 5670? An upgrade to a 6870 would be fantastic for any gaming that you do. Or a 570/580. Don't worry about how video cards perform in relation to CPUs, they make very little difference in the grand scheme of things.

The best performance for your dollar would be a 560 if you want to go green
