My System Specs

Default Silence is Golden

Hi folks,

I need your ideas on this, I'm looking to change my GPU and I'd like it to be as silent as possible. A few months back I was running a pair of Gigabytes HD 4850 passively cooled. One of my PICE went dead and I replaced this setup with an EVGA GTX 460 SC. I am certainly satisfied with the performance of the card but it can get pretty noisy even when you manually control the fan speed. Price can go up to around 300.00$. I don't need the top of the line GPU I have no need of this much power. For obvious reasons, it's not easy to pack power and silence in the same package but lets here what you think would be the best compromise. I still have my 2 HD 4850 and might resort to using them again but I'd like to have a more modern GPU that would meet this requirement.

Also of not, I am replacing my current AMD setup with an ASUS MB with a 2600k.

You could get an aftermarket cooler for the GPU if you are uncomfortable with the noise levels. Thermalright Shaman is not exactly passively cooled but with the huge fan it would make less noise. There are many other brands of GPU coolers out there that would make your PC silent. A better case with sound insulation foam would be good as well to dampen the noise instead of silencing your hardware. If your motherboard is of the right model there could be a chance that you can upgrade your processor to Bulldozer in 2-3 months more.

Power + Silence = Watercooling

If you are doing a new build, maybe it's something to consider. A 2x120 rad with 1000 RPM fans and a D5 (on 1 or 2) is pretty near silent and will keep the GPU way cooler than stock.

MSI cyclone or twinfrozr are the best for silence IMO.

Ya I've heard that those two are pretty good noise wise, they are definitely an option.

I think the ASUS DirectCu II would be a good option as well in the noise department. Something worth checking out at least.

Totally!

I have an asus 6850 directcuII oveclocked and it is still silent even when gaming! A friend of mine has a asus directcu 1g gtx460, also overclocked, and also silent. I would recommend this asus design for both performance and silence!

this is what I would suggest, I wished I could find a pair of 4870x2 waterblocks for my cards before the summer hits
