Default AMD Radeon HD 6790 1GB Review

The $150 price point is a busy place these days with no less than five products from AMD and NVIDIA placed within $20 of it. Today we have yet another entry into this market with the Radeon HD 6790 1GB, a card that's based on a cut down Barts core. Hoping to pick up where the GTX 550 Ti left off, AMD has some high expectations for the HD 6790 but ... [ Read full article ]

well, not the 460 unseater as I expected (Half the ROPs D:), but it destroys the 550. excellent competitor.

I also totally called it being close to a 6850 when clocked :D

Further notes now that I've read the review and checked out pricing: It feels like this card was simply designed to compete against the 550, but for the price it's being offered at, it's going to get no business. This thing needs to drop in price asap for it to become a viable product in the market. If it costs the same as a 460, and the 460 performs better..? never mind plunking down the extra $10 for a 6850 which does defeat the 460 in most cases.

So while the card does slot in between a 550 and a 460, it also needs to be priced as such, which it's not. shame!

well it was known it'd be 150 bucks, now if they bring in mirs, which i personally hate but oh well, say on the magnitude of 20-30 dollarski?

whohooo now were talking!

but still, it does a mighty fine jobbe of killing the lesser geforce 550.

edit no unlocking rumors yet? :p

I like that, unlike most reviews, you put an emphasis that you can only get the 6850 under $170 with MIR. There are many reviews that say the 6790 is overpriced because the 6850 is only $10 more and the 460 768MB offers slightly better performance/$. I still find this card is uncharacteristic for ATI, who has many cards that beat the performance/$ of nvidia cards (in benchmarks, not perceived value). In their own line-up of cards, this is a fine price if we take MIR out of the equation, but against the GTX 460 card, it just doesn't make sense unless you're a die-hard ATI fan (or want to run eyefinity for non-gaming uses).

There is another aspect as well though: HD playback quality which we didn't test (since I absolutely hate HQV) but it is an area where AMD has traditionally dominated.

Well now that is a card more worth the $150 price point with its performance over the 550Ti. Good to see AMD can bring in a rather successfully looking card at reasonable price point with a market that is flooded with cars right now (thanks to AMD and nVidia)

Thanks for the good review, Sky.

It would be perfect if this card had within 10W of the 5770's power. Here's to hoping the next die shrink will force a better design!

I wonder if perhaps a pair of these might be more reasonable for my Res than the 6950's.
Good review, how was the drivers for these? No issues?
