I stand corrected in that the 560Ti is better than the HD 6970 in BC2, now that I have gone back and looked at other reviews. I think I may have been thinking about the OC'd results where it outperformed the HD 6970 in that game. However, I still do stand by Nvidia cards being favored in BC2. This can be seen when looking at a wide variety of reviews on the web, not just focusing on a single review.

Anyways, for an apple-to-apple comparison, I'd take the GTX 560Ti over the HD 6950 for BC2. Some reviews show the Nvidia card slightly ahead, others the GTX 560Ti. Of all the reviews I've seen though with minimum framerates, which are arguably more important than average framerates, the GTX 560Ti is ahead at most resolutions (all but 2560 x 1600). This can be seen right here on HardwareCanucks (NVIDIA GeForce GTX 560 Ti 1GB Review). I will say, though, that the HD 6950 does scale better at very high resolutions with more eye-candy. Probably something to do with the 2GB on the HD 6950.

@ Op: If you go with the 560Ti I'd suggest the MSI Frozr2 card. It can be had for around the same price as the reference cards but comes with a great non-reference cooler and can therefore generally clock very high. Also, the HD 6950 has better power consumption numbers than the GTX 560Ti.

I'm not championing Nvidia or anything. I had originally gone with a 2GB HD 6950 for my build but then went with the GTX 560Ti option after doing a bit more research. I also purchased with BC2 in mind, and for BC3 down the road. I'm also running at 1920x1080.

I'd probably favour nVidia too for it's robustness across all games, CUDA (Civ V textures) and .. folding? but for strictly a frostbite engine build, I'd have to recommend AMD over nVidia, especially at the higher resolutions. I'm reasonably sure the frostbite 2 engine in BF3 will favour nVidia as well.

was the 6970 also OC'ed in those reviews though? :P Works both ways! And minimum frame rate is more important as well indeed, though at the resolutions the OP is playing at it won't matter too much, it doesn't dip below the magical 30 fps mark and a minimun frame rate delta of 4 fps between the two I don't think would be too noticeable.

The HD 6950 will be a better option then, since I don't believe there are any 560's that exhaust strictly out the rear of the case. All the reference 560's blow air both directions in the shroud, although most of the air does come out of the rear of the case. The heat dump inside the case wouldn't be too bad, but if you're already struggling with air-flow then I'd go for the 6950.

EDIT: Just realized you were looking at the HD 6850 earlier in the thread and not the HD 6950. Also, I actually thought you were running on 1920x1200 and not 1680x1050 like you said. I also realize now that this is for a comp for when friends come over to play. Having realized all this, I'd say you're best off with an HD 6850, HD 5850 or even a GTX 460, etc. An HD 6950 or GTX 560Ti is overkill for your application. Sorry for the confusion.
