Default What OC did you guys get for 8800GT?

I'm wondering about what kind of OC you guys reached, especially if you have an Accelero S1 or something like that installed.

I bought a Galaxy 8800GT and I got the heatpipe cooler version and I've been wondering if it was worth it to buy extra cooling for it. With the stock cooler, the core maxes out at 675Mhz (from 600Mhz default) and the RAM gets up to 1100Mhz (so 2.2Ghz effective). That's not too bad, but I was wondering how much further I could push it with better cooling?

What are your temps like? I have the Evga GT SC w/stock cooling (ya still I know) and I cranked it up to 700 / 1000. I was well into the 70s under load but stable on everything except one 3DMark test. I wish I could remember which 3DMark but I can't and OCForums is blocked from my work (it's not me I swear ).

But basically Viper John discovered that just about any OC on the memory of an 8800GT will cause an avalanche cascade on that one test (little red squares and flags covering the screen)... meaning the OC is not stable. So now I leave it at stock SC settings (650/950) and am still quite happy.

Wow I'm going to have to try find info about that test. I've been running that 1100Mhz RAM overclock for weeks now without any crash or visual artifact. ATItool doesn't show any yellow squares and I've been playing The Witcher, Portal and Neverwinter Nights 2 without any visual artifact at all.

I'm running the overclock 24/7, since I can't seem to figure out how to run it only when 3D is enabled. Anyway, at idle my core is at 47C. When under full load for one hour or so with the ATItool, it reaches 75C. However the OC seems completely stable AFAIK, and I heard that anything under 80C with a 8800GT was fine.

I'm going to try and see if I can make that test to stress my RAM overclock. Hopefully I don't need a registered version of 3dmark.

I just "registered" *cough* my version of 3dmark06 to see if that test was accessible, and I didn't see anything looking like flags. I can't seem to find that post on the OCforums.

Hum, I just found a comment on OCForums saying I should try running "Canyon Flight" from 3dmark05 and the proxycon test on 3dmark06. I can confirm that the proxycon test is 100% stable at least, I'll try getting 3dmark05 and looping the canyon test a bit...

Downloading now...

Meh it looks like the same test at 06. Anyway I just did a full 10 loop of the test, with 8xAA and Anisotropic filtering at 1680x1050 and there wasn't a single artifact. I'm pretty sure the RAM is stable at 2.2Ghz.

One thing to note is that the Galaxy card is not a reference design. That might be why it can go higher on the RAM frequency. It has 3 phase power regulation and it needs 2 PCI-E power connectors.

I wish I could go higher than 675Mhz on the core though. That's why I was curious about people's experience with a non-stock cooler.

Well aren't you a fancy pants with your non-reference 8800GT. That's awesome about the canyon test. I got artifacts my first run through :P

If you are using ATItool to set your OC you can use the "detect 3D" option under settings (IIRC). That will allow you to have normal clocks for desktop and use the profile you created for your OC when you launch a game.

Heh, funny thing is that this card was by no means my first choice, but at the time I bought it, the evga cards were like $80 more! So I went with the Galaxy one (brand I didn't know at all) for $229. I knew it wasn't a reference model but it actually worried me instead of being a positive.

One thing that still kinda worries me is that the card is a bit shorter than the reference and I'm wondering if the chipset is located at the same place as the reference one. It would suck to buy an after-market cooler and not having it fit the card. Other than that I'm happy with the Galaxy card, I just wish they had a lifetime warranty like some other brands.

My PNY XLR8 8800GT is cooled by an Accelero S1 with dual 120mm Scythe fans. It idles at 41C, and runs at 59C loaded. OC settings are 748MHz core, 1917MHz shader and 1020MHz memory. Memory clocks are low since I don't have any heatsinks on the ram - I need to take care of that soon.

@ spblue, here's a Guide related to Rivatuner which I have followed and found to be very complete. RivaTuner 2.0 fan speed & Overclock Guide. It will show you how to create an OC setup which you can activate and deactivate very easily.

Ya the rivatuner guide is good for fan profiles and OC except you have to enable/disbale manually. I used it for a while till the bios update from evga came out. Fan is now a little quieter and temps are pretty much the same.

canyon run went spastic when i tried pushing memory clock to 1050 .

i used rivatuner to get stable OC, using "8800GT + Accelero S1 = Love?" as as guide, i have the same Gigabyte GT.

i have an accelero as well lol, neighbour asked me 2dai if i want to make a sort of aluminium bridge to rivet onto the ramsinks . i duno if its necessary . it runs as low as 39 degrees idle as it is ..
